Abstract In the past decades (1982–2012), rapid increase in nitrogen and phosphorus inputs has led to a two‐fold concentrations East China Sea. To investigate how increasing nutrients Sea have been affecting marine environment growth of plankton, this paper establishes modeling framework using coupled ocean hydrodynamics‐ecological model. Observational sea surface temperature, salinity, nutrients, chlorophyll‐a are compared with predictions validate model performance. The study reveals that dissolved inorganic (DIN) phosphate (PO 4 3− ‐P) highest at Yangtze River Estuary, slightly lower Zhejiang‐Fujian nearshore, much open sea, exhibiting significant seasonal variations closely related biomass plankton. Over decades, DIN PO ‐P increased by 294% 253%, respectively, over 291% 76% both which characterized high nitrogen‐phosphorus ratios. As result, plankton 26% averaged two regions. Sensitivity experiments indicate enhancement Estuary is primarily attributed phosphorus, whereas nearshore explained combined effects increases. This contributes development ecological conservation strategies for rivers coastal seawaters future.
