Deep-sea chemosynthetic communities, including hydrothermal vents and cold seeps, harbour hundreds of endemic species currently threatened by deep-sea mining hydrocarbon extraction. The South China Sea (SCS), a semi-enclosed marginal sea with two well-investigated active seeps (Haima in the west Site F east), provides an opportunity to understand biogeography ecosystems. Here, we conducted extensive field surveys using Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) collected specimens for morphological observations, molecular barcoding, phylogenetic analysis, stable isotope analysis. Cluster analyses were applied reveal community structure Western Pacific Northern Indian Ocean. A total 65 covering seven phyla 14 classes have been identified from Haima, doubling number reported previously. Among them, 35 are known only Haima. Stable analysis shows typical chemosynthesis-based biological community. Community at genus level clustered Haima F, though compositions dominance fairly distinct. Between SCS, higher richness endemism potentially due multiple factors, unique environmental factors there geographic isolation northwestern corner SCS. Moreover, similarity between SCS North Ocean was revealed, mediated Early Pliocene opening Indonesian islands strong westward Indonesia Throughflow. Given ongoing gas hydrate exploration activities our results will contribute establishing global network marine protected areas chemosynthetic-based rich biodiversity calls policymakers formulate regulations conserve there.

Chemosynthetic ecosystems off Aotearoa/New Zealand comprise both hydrothermal vents on the Kermadec Arc and methane seeps Hikurangi Margin which host rich communities of specialized fauna including 4 alvinocaridid shrimp species. The systematic positions these New shrimps have not been studied using genetic tools little is known about their habitat use feeding habits. Here, we re-evaluate taxonomy from barcoding characterize connectivity isotopic niches across 8 localities. We describe a new species, Alvinocaris webberi sp. nov., previously confused with A. longirostris . also show that alexander chelys are junior synonyms dissimilis , revealing high Japan to Zealand, greatly extending its range. Finally, find clear niche separation in co-occurring shrimps, suggesting different diets and/or use. Nevertheless, all species rely chemosynthetic resources, regardless depth, ranges 380 1650 m.

Abstract Information on genetic divergence and migration patterns of vent‐ seep‐endemic macrobenthos can help delimit biogeographical provinces provide scientific guidelines for deep‐sea conservation under the growing threats anthropogenic disturbances. Nevertheless, related studies are still scarce, impeding informed these hotspots biodiversity. To bridge this knowledge gap, we conducted a population connectivity study galatheoid squat lobster Shinkaia crosnieri – foundation species widely distributed in vent seep ecosystems Northwest Pacific. With application an interdisciplinary methodology involving genomics oceanographic approaches, unveiled two semi‐isolated lineages S . with limited asymmetrical gene flow potentially shaped by geographic settings, habitat types, ocean currents one comprising populations Okinawa Trough, those inhabiting southern trough area likely serving as source; other being Jiaolong (JR) South China Sea. The latter might have recently experienced pronounced demographic contraction exhibited introgression from Trough lineage, mediated intrusion North Pacific Intermediate Water. We then compared biogeographic between representative co‐occurring using published data. Based their subdivisions source‐sink dynamics, highlighted vents JR warrant imperative efforts to sustain biodiversity
