While adult sex ratio (ASR) is a crucial component for population management, there still limited understanding of how its fluctuation affects dynamics. To demonstrate mechanisms that hinder growth under biased ASR, we examined changes in reproductive success with ASR using decapod crustacean exposed to female-selective harvesting. We the effect on spawning females. A laboratory experiment showed number eggs carried by females decreased as proportion males mating groups increased. Although same result was not observed data collected over 25 years wild, negative suggested when carrying considered success. These results indicate surplus failing carry eggs, probably due sexual coercion, and can be detected at level only bias increases because failure occurs part population. experimentally male-biased ratios affected maintenance genetic diversity The paternity clutch increased candidate fathers. However, 50% fertilised single male regardless ratio, degree less than half highest expected each group. also ability during breeding season. multiple could compensate risk their genotypes would lost competed one female. suggest trigger decline show skewed harvesting decreases have few opportunities but discuss may underestimate significance persistence difficulty revealing ASR.

Chemical cues are widely used in intraspecific and interspecific communication, either as substances deposited the substrate or molecules diffused water air. In tardigrades, an emerging microscopic study system, chemical communication its role reproduction poorly known. Here, we assessed sex differences detection of (a) short-range diffusing signals (b) cue trails during mate-searching behaviour freely moving virgin male female Macrobiotus polonicus. We tracked individual simultaneous double-choice chambers, where live conspecifics each were presented pairs on agar without water. found that males, but not females, preferentially associated with opposite-sex individuals trials conducted contrast, neither detected nor followed agar. conclusion, our suggests mate discrimination approach male-specific traits limited to waterborne cues. These results support existence Darwinian roles pre-mating animal group virtually non-existing morphology ecology.

Once thought to be a unique capability of the Langerhans islets in pancreas mammals, insulin (INS) signaling is now recognized as an evolutionarily ancient function going back prokaryotes. INS ubiquitously present not only humans but also unicellular eukaryotes, fungi, worms, and Drosophila . Remote homologue identification supports presence receptor corals where availability glucose largely dependent on photosynthetic activity symbiotic algae. The marine medaka is emerging as a potential behavioral model organism for ocean studies, namely on ecotoxicology. However, not much known the behavior of species and assays lack standardization. This study assesses chemical communication. We investigated how short exposure to visual cues mediated stress response social isolation with light/dark preference test (LDPT) open field (OFT). After 5-day period, 1 h before testing, isolated fish were randomly assigned one four groups: (1) placed in contact conspecifics; (2) exposed flow holding water from group (3) both or (4) any stimuli (controls). During LDPT, distance traveled transitions between zones more pronounced animals conspecific's stimuli. time spent each area did differ groups, but clear bright all indicates robust phototaxis. OFT, only initially than those stimuli, displayed lower thigmotaxis. Taken together, results show that play significant role exploratory this confirm LDPT OFT suitable tests investigating communication species.

Abstract The tongue serves as a vital organ in mammals, facilitating crucial functions such mastication, swallowing, vocalization, thermoregulation, and taste reception. Cetacean tongues have evolved under distinct selective pressures compared to those of terrestrial yet research on their is limited, leading controversy regarding gustatory abilities. This study aims elucidate the morphological characteristics fetal common minke whales through both gross microscopic observations. Macroscopic examination revealed that papillae marginales were only lingual obviously developed all specimens, these projections are hypothesized aid suckling during nursing period.
