This study aimed to assess the pollution and potential ecological risk of seven heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Zn) in sewage sludge collected from a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), located most industrialized region Poland (Silesian Voivodeship). The concentrations were determined using inductively coupled plasma optical spectrometry (ICP-OES) cold vapor atomic absorption (CVAAS). chemical forms (chemical speciation) three-step sequential extraction procedure, developed by Community Bureau Reference (BCR). To level risk, following indices used: Geoaccumulation Index (Igeo), Potential Ecological Risk Factor (ER), Individual Contamination (ICF), Assessment Code (RAC), (ERF)-the author's index. Sludge samples at successive stages processing. results revealed that activated process thickening have significant impact on metal distribution, while anaerobic digestion dehydration decrease their mobility. dominant Zn Cu. However, content did not exceed permissible standards for agricultural purposes. bound immobile fractions exhibited higher concentrations, compared those mobile (except Zn). values total indicated moderately highly contaminated with Zn, Cd, which only Cu posed according speciation indices, very polluted Cd environmentally hazardous. obtained proved assessment requires knowledge both forms. Such an approach will help prevent secondary soils metals, may influence reduction health risks associated consumption plants characterized high content.

Abstract The concentrations and sources of heavy metals in shallow sediments Lake Bafa were investigated. nine the total organic carbon content sediment samples determined for between Summer 2015 Spring 2016. mean contents decreasing order Fe > Mn Ni Cr Zn Cu Co Pb Cd. Sediment quality guidelines indicate that Cr, Cu, pose a considerable threat to aquatic ecosystem Bafa. Site L3 was found be contaminated with Cd, Ni, pollution load indices suggest these had anthropogenic sources. notably enriched Cd Ni. There is no consistent trend seasonal effect terms sample locations. However, at all sampling points, an increase metal observed autumn. results multivariate analysis Co, Fe, Mn, Pb, natural, anthropogenic, both natural. These highlight particularly represent most serious lake.

Abstract The objectives of the article are: to assess spatio-temporal evolution eutrophication and water quality Turawa dam reservoir, located in south-western Poland on Mała Panew River; identify location relationship between potential sources physicochemical pollution related progressing process eutrophication; determine trophic status indices selected research object. analysis (Mann–Whitney U test, PCA, HCA, Spearman correlation matrix) showed a high susceptibility reservoir processes, especially due influence dangerous loads compounds emerging from areas with tourist intensity pollutants flowing River. parameters deteriorating ecological were TP, DO, BOD 5 , COD. Considering cumulative results for period 1998–2020, average was classes II or III. A noticeable deterioration appeared years 2016–2020, which proves reservoir. In classified as eutrophic mesoeutrophic based calculated three indices. This would help developing strategy dealing blooms, reliable system monitoring pressures causing eutrophication, optimal technologies reconstruction multifunctional reservoirs.

The present study aimed to demonstrate that identification of the chemical forms heavy metals in sewage sludge produced municipal Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) is a critical element ecological risk assessment, especially terms its agricultural or natural use. concentrations seven (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn and Hg) were determined using inductively coupled plasma optical spectrometry (ICP-OES) cold vapor atomic absorption (CV-AAS). analyzed accordance with sequential extraction method proposed by Community Bureau Reference (BCR). Sludge samples collected at five WWTPs located largest industrial area country, i.e., Upper Silesian Industrial Region (southern Poland, central Europe). was assessed calculating Potential Ecological Risk Factor (ER), Index (RI), Assessment Code (RAC), Individual Contamination (ICF), Global (GRI) as well author’s indices, (IER) (GER). To differences between level posed different metals, two specific points processing line. Considering highest Zn, Cd while case their total concentrations, Hg. obtained results confirm quantitative determination content not sufficient criterion assessment these elements pose environment living organisms. Moreover, multivariate statistical analysis revealed significant correlation which indicates they plausibly originate from same source pollution.
