Annelid biodiversity studies in the Red Sea are limited and integrative taxonomy is needed to accurately improve reference libraries region. As part of bioblitz effort Saudi Arabia assess invertebrate northern Gulf Aqaba, Perinereis specimens from intertidal marine lagoon-like rocky environments were selected for an independent assessment, given known taxonomic ambiguities this genus. This study used approach, combining molecular with morphological geographic data. Our results demonstrate that found mainly Aqaba not only morphologically different other five similar Group I species reported region, but phylogenetic analysis using available COI sequences GenBank revealed operational units, suggesting undescribed species, P. kaustiana sp. nov. The new genetically close shares a paragnath pattern Indo-Pacific distributed helleri , particular Area III Areas VII–VIII. Therefore, we suggest it may belong same complex. However, differs latter shorter length postero-dorsal tentacular cirri, median parapodia much longer dorsal Tentacular posteriormost wider greatly expanded ligules. Additionally, two records Neom area belonging damietta suezensis previously described Egyptian coast (Suez Canal) sympatrically apparently sympatric each other.

Introduction Maritime traffic and coastal urbanisation significantly contribute to the introduction proliferation of non-indigenous species (NIS). However, lack information might prevent effective monitoring in data-limited regions, particularly areas experiencing demographic growth, where biofouling communities could offer crucial insights into dynamics NIS invasions. This study represents a baseline characterization northern Saudi Arabian Red Sea (NEOM region) prior extensive urban, industrial, commercial development. Methods Samples were collected November 2023 February 2024 from seven sites within region. At each site time, three settlement structures, with PVC panel attached brick rope, sampled after 3-months deployment. Panels analysed photo quadrat analysis (PhQd), examined manually collect sessile macroinvertebrate specimens for taxonomic identification using morphological DNA barcoding analysis, scraped bulk analyses metabarcoding. Five water samples also environmental (eDNA) analysis. The characteristics obtained by deploying temperature data loggers through an risk assessment. Results Community patterns observed PhQd datasets revealed clear separation two Sharma lagoon remaining sites. eDNA seawater confirmed these spatial differences, detecting variation between sampling times that was not other approaches. A total 20 18 cryptogenic recorded, which 12 identified morphologically detected molecular methods only. generally low coverage confirms NEOM region is less affected marine biological invasions compared anthropized habitats Sea. showed high human pressure levels comparatively higher bryozoans on panels. Discussion provides first detailed assessment NEOM, establishing contributing regional reference library species. As development spreads, it presents both challenges opportunities, highlighting need sustainable, ecosystem-based approaches protect valuable natural areas. essential future as develops.

Recent expeditions to the North-East Atlantic and Arctic Ocean yielded an abundance of specimens resembling two species polychaetes family Cirratulidae Ryckholt, 1851 originally described in 1879 tentatively placed within genus Cirratulus Lamarck, 1818. In this study, we set out confirm their identity, assess potential presence cryptic species, determine correct generic placement, gain insights into distributions. Our approach involved comprehensive analyses using four molecular markers (COI, 16S, 28S, 18S) through Bayesian inference, maximum likelihood analyses, haplotype networks. Additionally, conducted detailed morphological examinations both light electron microscopy techniques. Notably, study provides first DNA sequences for a Chaetocirratulus Blake, 2018. By integrating phylogenetic with assessments, establish revised taxonomic placements these as abranchiatus (Hansen, 1879) comb. nov. Aphelochaeta abyssorum Phylogenetic also recover close relationship between Chaetocirratulus, Cirriformia. Furthermore, our research reveals wide distribution waters, marking report region. We present re-descriptions according contemporary standards, complemented by extensive illustrations. A lectotype is selected neotype abyssorum.

ABSTRACT Genetic data show that many nominal species are composed of more than one biological species, and thus contain cryptic in the broad sense (including overlooked species). When ignored, generate confusion which, beyond biodiversity or vulnerability underestimation, blurs our understanding ecological evolutionary processes may impact soundness decisions conservation medicine. However, very few hypotheses have been tested about factors predispose a taxon to species. To fill this gap, we surveyed literature on free‐living marine metazoans built two sets, 187,603 another 83 classes phyla, test several hypotheses, correcting for sequence availability, size phylogenetic relatedness. We found strong effect scientific history: probability containing was highest earliest described varied among time periods potentially consistently with an influence prevailing theories. For all models, traits, rather phylum, appeared responsible variation classes: there fewer expected hard skeletons (perhaps because they provide good characters taxonomy) image‐forming vision (in which selection against heterospecific mating enhance morphological divergence), internal fertilisation. estimate metazoans, thousand additional complexes could be identified as become available. important animal likely other biomes taxa should aid areas biology rely accurate identification.

Proteinaceous toxins are peptides or proteins that hold great biotechnological value, evidenced by their ecological role, whether as defense predation mechanisms. Bioprospecting using bioinformatics and omics may render screening for novel bioactives more expeditious, especially considering the immense diversity of toxin-secreting marine organisms. Eulalia sp. (Annelida: Phyllodocidae), a toxin bearing annelid, was recently shown to secrete cysteine-rich protein (Crisp) (hitherto referred ‘phyllotoxins’) can immobilize its prey. By analyzing validating transcriptomic data, we narrowed list isolated full coding sequences transcripts most abundant accompanying secreted species (the phyllotoxin Crisp, hyaluronidase, serine protease, peptidases M12A, M13, M12B). Through homology matching with human proteins, potential annelid’s related tentatively associated coagulative anti-inflammatory responses PepM12A, SePr, PepM12B, PepM13, neurotoxic activity finally, hyaluronidase inferred bear properties an permeabilizing agent. The in silico analysis succeeded validation PCR Sanger sequencing enabled us retrieve cDNAs be used heterologous expression these toxins.
