Annelid

Introduction
Maritime
traffic
and
coastal
urbanisation
significantly
contribute
to
the
introduction
proliferation
of
non-indigenous
species
(NIS).
However,
lack
information
might
prevent
effective
monitoring
in
data-limited
regions,
particularly
areas
experiencing
demographic
growth,
where
biofouling
communities
could
offer
crucial
insights
into
dynamics
NIS
invasions.
This
study
represents
a
baseline
characterization
northern
Saudi
Arabian
Red
Sea
(NEOM
region)
prior
extensive
urban,
industrial,
commercial
development.
Methods
Samples
were
collected
November
2023
February
2024
from
seven
sites
within
region.
At
each
site
time,
three
settlement
structures,
with
PVC
panel
attached
brick
rope,
sampled
after
3-months
deployment.
Panels
analysed
photo
quadrat
analysis
(PhQd),
examined
manually
collect
sessile
macroinvertebrate
specimens
for
taxonomic
identification
using
morphological
DNA
barcoding
analysis,
scraped
bulk
analyses
metabarcoding.

water
samples

(eDNA)

Recent
expeditions
to
the
North-East
Atlantic
and
Arctic
Ocean
yielded
an
abundance
of
specimens
resembling
two
species
polychaetes
family
Cirratulidae
Ryckholt,
1851
originally
described
in
1879
tentatively
placed
within
genus
Cirratulus
Lamarck,
1818.
In
this
study,
we
set
out
confirm
their
identity,
assess
potential
presence
cryptic
species,
determine
correct
generic
placement,
gain
insights
into
distributions.
Our
approach
involved
comprehensive
analyses
using
four
molecular
markers
(COI,
16S,
28S,
18S)
through
Bayesian
inference,
maximum
likelihood
analyses,
haplotype
networks.
Additionally,
conducted
detailed
morphological
examinations
both
light
electron
microscopy
techniques.
Notably,
study
provides
first
DNA
sequences
for
a
Chaetocirratulus
Blake,
2018.
By
integrating
phylogenetic

Cirratulidae
is

group

marine
benthic
annelids
with

species

worldwide,

ABSTRACT
Genetic
data
show
that
many
nominal
species
are
composed
of
more
than
one
biological
species,
and
thus
contain
cryptic
in
the
broad
sense
(including
overlooked
species).
When
ignored,
generate
confusion
which,
beyond
biodiversity
or
vulnerability
underestimation,
blurs
our
understanding
ecological
evolutionary
processes
may
impact
soundness
decisions
conservation
medicine.
However,
very
few
hypotheses
have
been
tested
about
factors
predispose
a
taxon
to
species.
To
fill
this
gap,
we
surveyed
literature
on
free‐living
marine
metazoans
built
two
sets,
187,603

classes
phyla,

hypotheses,
correcting

sequence
availability,

phylogenetic
relatedness.

This
study

first
comprehensive
annotated
checklist
of
polychaetes
collected
from
floating
dock
communities
across
New
England
and
adjacent
York
areas,
emphasizing
significance
rapid
biodiversity
assessment
surveys
in
understanding
marine
biodiversity.
With
61%
identified
species
classified
as
cryptogenic,
research
highlights
complexity
biogeography
challenges
distinguishing
between
native
non-native
species.
The
incorporation
DNA
barcoding
has
significantly
improved
identification
revealed
presence
cryptic
complexes.

findings
illustrate
prevalence
tubicolous
families
(Spionidae,
Serpulidae,
Sabellidae,
Terebelllidae)
