Abstract Groundwater is the second largest store of freshwater in world. The sustainability ecosystem largely dependent on groundwater availability, and has already been under tremendous pressure to fulfill human needs owing anthropogenic activities around various parts footprints can be witnessed terms looming climate change, water pollution, changes available resources. This paper provides a comprehensive view linkage between groundwater, system, activities, with focus Indian region. significant prior works addressing groundwater-induced response climatic system impacts through natural human-instigated processes are reviewed. condition quality India respect physicochemical, heavy metal biological contamination discussed. utility remote sensing GIS groundwater-related studies discussed, focusing Gravity Recovery Climate Experiment (GRACE) applications over GRACE-based estimates terrestrial storage have instrumental numerous recent times. Based literature review, sustainable practices adopted for optimum utilization different purposes possible groundwater-based adaptation strategies change also enunciated.

The concerns of water availability have been increasing due to population explosion, rapid industrialization, and other anthropogenic activities. This urges for an accurate estimation streamflow at the river basin scale, which is typically carried out by application rainfall-runoff models. Though numerous models exist in hydrology literature, their efficiency over mountainous catchments generally observed be poor, mostly lack high-quality data such regions. study presents widely used soil assessment tool (SWAT)-based hydrological modelling using high-resolution geospatial inputs Tehri reservoir catchment (India) located lower Himalayan region. Resourcesat-2 Linear Imaging Self-Scanning System (LISS)-IV imageries land use/land cover (LULC) Cartosat-1 digital elevation model (DEM) are procured from National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), India. LULC DEM a spatial resolution 5.8 m 2.5 m, respectively. SWAT applied duration 12 years (2006-2017) with 2006, 2007-2013 2014-2017 as warm-up, calibration validation periods, results reveal excellent performance simulation. efficacy measures viz., Nash–Sutcliffe (NSE) Coefficient determination (R2) obtained 0.83 0.84, information reported this will helpful resources engineers hydrologic catchments.

Land use and land cover (LULC) changes are important indicators of environmental socio-economic made by the natural anthropogenic sources. The present study is based on Cellular Automata (CA) Markov model for predicting LULC in Tawi Basin. To decipher spatio-temporal distributions LULC, Landsat images 2010 2020 were used to analysis classification. Further, CA simulations various scenarios eight decades (2030 2100) generated historical data know perspective Basin, which has witnessed enormous developmental activities growth settlement, population, agriculture sector over years. predicts a population explosion leading rapid urbanization rural expansions. Settlement expected increase from 5.29% total area 13.975% year 2100. CA–Markov results paint picture significant settlement patterns serves as crucial tool guiding future planning efforts, urging environmentalists, planners, decision-makers prioritize sustainable practices make informed decisions well-being region.

Surface water monitoring is a necessary component of researching ecological and hydrological processes. Recent improvements in satellite-based remote sensors have ushered new era the area surface monitoring. The assessment mapping resources semi-arid regions are one challenging tasks for research domain hydrogeologists decision-makers. In this study, an inventory existing ancillary data remotely sensed data, i.e., Landsat 7 ETM+, 8 OLI/TIRS, DEM used south India. For resources, twenty years land cover changes were assessed using Modification Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI) techniques. Each MNDWI has been classified into five categories viz., fallow land, vegetation developed moisture soils, bodies, based on pixel values varying from +1 to -1. results reveal that bodies vary year over past two decades. (36.20 %), lands (35.37 %) decreased, (22.56 soils (4.81 (1.06 increased decades 2000 2020. Most differed statistically another, however, when defining with content, there some commonalities. found be efficient identifying bodies.

The land surface temperature (LST) pattern is regarded as one of the most important indicators environmental consequences use/land cover change. possible contribution to warming phenomenon being investigated by scientists across world. This research focuses on variations in and urban heat islands (UHIs) over course two seasons, i.e., winter summer. Using remotely sensed datasets geospatial techniques, an attempt was made analyze spatiotemporal variation its association with LULC Chandigarh from 2000 2020. Enhanced Built-up Bareness Index (EBBI), Dry (DBI), Bare-Soil (DBSI) were used identify built-up areas city. results revealed increase 10.08% BA, whereas vegetation decreased 4.5% study period, which close agreement EBBI, DBI, DBSI assessments. From 2020, UHI intensities increased steadily both summer seasons. Dense such industrial unit city possessed highest UHIindex (>0.7) values.
