Abstract Eutrophication is a major global concern in lakes, caused by excessive nutrient loadings (nitrogen and phosphorus) from human activities likely exacerbated climate change. Present use of indicators to monitor assess lake eutrophication restricted water quality constituents (e.g. total phosphorus, nitrogen) does not necessarily represent environmental changes the anthropogenic influences within lake’s drainage basin. Nutrients interact multiple ways with climate, basin conditions socio-economic development, point-source, diffuse source pollutants), systems. It therefore essential account for complex feedback mechanisms non-linear interactions that exist between nutrients ecosystems assessments. However, lack set holistic understanding challenges such assessments, addition limited monitoring data available. In this review, we synthesize main freshwater basins only include but also sources, biogeochemical pathways responses emissions. We develop new causal network (i.e. links indicators) using DPSIR (drivers-pressure-state-impact-response) framework highlights interrelationships among provides perspective dynamics basins. further review 30 key drivers pressures seven cross-cutting themes: (i) hydro-climatology, (ii) socio-economy, (iii) land use, (iv) characteristics, (v) crop farming livestock, (vi) hydrology management, (vii) fishing aquaculture. This study indicates need more comprehensive systems, guide expansion networks, support integrated assessments manage eutrophication. Finally, proposed can be used managers decision-makers realistic targets sustainable management achieve clean all, line Sustainable Development Goal 6.

Wastewater is not a liability, instead considered as resource for microbial fermentation and value-added products. Most of the wastewater contains various nutrients like nitrates phosphates apart from organic constituents that favor growth. Microalgae are unicellular aquatic organisms widely used treatment. Various cultivation methods such open, closed, integrated have been reported microalgal to treat recovery simultaneously. Microalgal growth affected by factors sunlight, temperature, pH, affect rate microalgae. can consume urea, phosphates, metals magnesium, zinc, lead, cadmium, arsenic, etc. their reduces biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). The biomass produced during treatment be further produce carbon-neutral products biofuel, feed, bio-fertilizer, bioplastic, exopolysaccharides. Integration with bio-refinery only solves problem but also generates revenue supports sustainable circular bio-economy. present review will highlight current advanced integrate microalgae complete reclamation industrial sources utilization compound production. Furthermore, pertaining challenges briefly discussed along techno-economic analysis pilot-scale projects worldwide.

Abstract Traditional wastewater treatment has been aimed solely at sanitation by removing contaminants, yet actual issues of climate change and depletion natural resources are calling for methods that both remove contaminants convert waste into chemicals fuels. In particular, biological treatments with synergic coupling microalgae bacteria appear promising to organic, inorganic, pathogen generate biofuels. Here, we review the use algae in valorization focus on cell-to-cell adhesion, properties, techniques harvesting production biodiesel, bioethanol, biohydrogen, exopolysaccarides, biofertilizers, animal feeds.

Efficient characterization of wastewater stream quality is vital to ensure the safe discharge or reuse treated (WW). There are numerous parameters employed characterize water quality, some required by directives (e.g. biological oxygen demand (BOD), total nitrogen (TN), phosphates (TP)), while others used for process controls flow, temperature, pH). Well-accepted methods assess these have traditionally been laboratory-based, taking place either off-line at-line, and presenting a significant delay between sampling result. Alternative can run in-line on-line, generally being more cost-effective. Unfortunately, often not accepted when providing information regulatory bodies. The current review aims describe available laboratory-based approaches compare them with innovative real-time (RT) solutions. Transitioning from RT measurements means obtaining valuable data, avoiding time delays, possibility optimize (WW) treatment management. A variety sensor categories examined illustrate general framework in which applications replace longer conventional processes, an eye toward potential drawbacks. enhancement be achieved through employment advanced soft-sensing techniques Internet Things (IoT), coupled machine learning (ML) artificial intelligence (AI).

The present study aimed to determine the effect of a 17.6 mT static magnetic field (SMF) on efficiency anaerobic digestion (AD) municipal sewage sludge (MSS). SMF had significant impact methane (CH4) production efficiency, levels fermentation rate (ηFMSS) vs. removal (ηVS), and structure bacteria consortium, but it did not affect cumulative biogas production. highest CH4 yield (431 ± 22 dm3CH4/kgVS) content in (66.1% 1.9%) were found variant which exposure time was 144 min/day. This also produced ηFMSS ηVS values, reaching 73.8% 2.3% 36.9% 1.6%, respectively. Longer retention area significantly decreased AD caused reduction number methanogens community. lowest values observed for 432 min/day, only 54.8 1.9% biogas.
