Abstract. Addressing the sustainability challenges that humanity is facing in Anthropocene requires coupling of human and natural systems, rather than their separate treatment. To help understand dynamics a coupled system (CHANS) support design policies measures promote sustainability, we propose conceptual cascade framework “pattern–process–service–sustainability”, which characterized by landscape patterns ecological processes, linking processes to ecosystem services, promoting social–ecological sustainability. The use this illustrated review CHANS research experience China's Loess Plateau (LP), well-known region for its historically severe soil erosion successful restoration achieved recent decades. Ecological LP has greatly increased vegetation coverage controlled erosion. However, some accompanied issues, like drying areas due introduction exotic plant species mismanagement planted water conflicts between humans caused trade-off carbon sequestration supply, have started threaten long-term LP. Based on comprehensive understanding dynamics, can be improved through enhancing food security, implementing basin-wide governance, maintaining achievements, rural livelihood transition. accumulated offers examples application pattern–process–service–sustainability framework. Future using should especially focus integrated multiple processes; cascades structure, function, well-being; feedback mechanisms systems; data models

Sustainability science seeks to understand human-nature interactions behind sustainability challenges, but has largely been place-based. Traditional efforts often solved problems in one place at the cost of other places, compromising global sustainability. The metacoupling framework offers a conceptual foundation and holistic approach integrating within place, as well between adjacent places distant worldwide. Its applications show broad utilities for advancing with profound implications sustainable development. They have revealed effects on performance, synergies, trade-offs United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across borders local scales; untangled complex interactions; identified new network attributes; unveiled spatio-temporal dynamics metacoupling; uncovered invisible feedbacks metacoupled systems; expanded nexus approach; detected integrated hidden phenomena overlooked issues; re-examined theories such Tobler's First Law Geography; unfolded transformations among noncoupling, coupling, decoupling, recoupling. Results from are also helpful achieve SDGs space, amplify benefits ecosystem restoration boundaries scales, augment transboundary management, broaden spatial planning, boost supply chains, empower small agents large world, shift place-based flow-based governance. Key topics future research include cascading an event both nearby far away. Operationalizing can benefit further tracing flows scales uplifting rigor causal attribution, enlarging toolboxes, elevating financial human resources. Unleashing full potential will generate more important scientific discoveries effective solutions justice

A range of existing and newly developed hydrogen standards, certification labelling (SCL) schemes aim to promote the role 'renewable', 'clean' or 'green' in decarbonising energy transitions. This paper analyses a sample these SCLs assess their scaling up renewable its derivatives. To analyse SCLs, we embellish novel conceptual framework that brings together Sustainability, Systems Thinking, Governance (SSG) literatures. The results reveal noteworthy scheme differences motivation, approach, criteria, governance; highlighting complex, interconnected, dynamic reality within which systems are embedded. We consider whether sustainable utilisation is well-served by proliferation recommend an SSG-informed approach. An SSG approach will better collaboration towards authoritative, global, multistakeholder, compromise on balances economic considerations with social, environmental dimensions.

Abstract Canopy openings are increasing in Europe’s forests, yet the contributions of anthropogenic and ecological agents disturbance to this increase remain debated. Here we attribute root cause all stand-replacing canopy disturbances identified for Europe period 1986–2020 from Landsat data (417,000 km²), distinguishing between planned unplanned (i.e., by human land use versus wind, bark beetles, wildfire). We show that humans dominate European forest regime, accounting 82% area disturbed. Both increased early 21st century (+24% +30% relative late 20th century). Their changes linked, with simultaneous increases on 68% area. conclude an important direction tackling change policy management is break link forests.
