The term nature-based solutions (NBS) has gained traction in recent years and been applied many settings. There are few comprehensive assessment frameworks available that can guide NBS planning implementation while at the same time capturing short- long-term impacts benefits of NBS. Here a recently presented framework, which builds on theory change was developed to assess different phases project cycle, seven diverse case studies. studies addressed water quality quantity issues peri-urban areas across global north south. Framework indicators covering sustainability dimensions (environmental, social economic) were assessed three stages framework: context, process results. work sought investigate following research objectives: (1) Can this framework be robust yet flexible enough selection projects cycle address kinds challenges within varied ecological, economic contexts? (2) Is it possible draw generalisations from comparative analysis application studies? Results showed able studies; however, their diversity designed one for specific purpose location, not necessarily transferred easily another location. several process-based universally significant studies, including expertise, skills knowledge involved actors, roles responsibilities actors political support. result-based study-specific when environmental study-specific, important identity recreational values. Overall, use recognition implementation’s advances, such as processes place results obtained.

Invasive alien plants (IAPs) pose a serious threat to biodiversity, agriculture, health, and economies globally. Accurate mapping of IAPs is crucial for their management, mitigate impacts prevent further spread where possible. Remote sensing has become valuable tool in detecting IAPs, especially with freely available data such as Sentinel-2 satellite imagery. Yet, remote methods map herbaceous which tend be more difficult detect, particularly shrubland Mediterranean-type ecosystems, are still limited. There growing need detect at large scale monitoring management; however, countries or organizations limited budgets, this often not feasible. To address this, we aimed develop classification methodology based on optical IAP’s using Echium plantagineum case study the Fynbos Biome South Africa. We investigate use data, robust non-parametric classifier Random Forest, identify most important variables classification, all within cloud-based platform, Google Earth Engine. Findings reveal importance shortwave infrared red-edge parts spectrum including vegetation indices discriminating E. plantagineum. Here, demonstrate potential Forest classifier, Engine Mediterranean ecosystems.

Limited research on the hydrological impacts of invasive weeds hampers sustainable forest management and ecosystem restoration in biological scenarios. This study assumed that alien weed invasion could affect surface runoff sediment formation, with extent determining its impact soil water conservation. To test this hypothesis, three Eucalyptus benthamii Maiden & Cambage plantations Central Yunnan, Southwest China, infested Agerina adenophora (Spreng.) R. M. King H. Rob., were selected as experimental sites. Runoff monitored slopes varying levels—severe (SI), light (LI), no (NI) litter coverage, bare (BS)—over a year. The results showed cumulative NI (1.24 mm) SI (2.65 was significantly lower (p < 0.05) than LI (15.40 BS (13.10 mm); similarly, (3.3 × 10−3 Mg/ha) (2.4 (0.11 (0.14 Mg/ha). Therefore, areas invasion, weed-invaded slope forests are prone to serious loss, emphasizing need for prevention; however, severely degraded forests, maintaining heavily populations is beneficial provides scientific foundation ecologically restoring impacted by exotic invasion.

Abstract Forest restoration is critical for meeting global objectives related to climate change mitigation, biodiversity conservation and sustainable livelihoods. Recently, new technologies such as unmanned aerial vehicles (hereafter drones) have been promoted support activities across the planning, implementation, monitoring maintenance stages of forest restoration. Yet, there little empirical data on how development application drones are perceived by managers stakeholders intersect with existing social–ecological systems (SESs). Here, we investigate drone tree planting initiatives in Australia can ecosystem Through interviews focus groups key actors, examine opportunities challenges that experienced or foreseen use. Opportunities included ability access degraded sites difficult unsafe foot, example, following bushfires, floods landslides. They were also ease labour shortage bush regenerators Australia. Drones considered particularly useful when operating at scales around 20–100 ha. Challenges restrictive flying regulations prohibit use artificial intelligence plot courses through complex terrain, their unproven control eradicate weeds uncertain supply, germination survival rates seeds—upon which drone‐based relies. Drone may reduce emotional, spiritual cultural connections people land, compared hand‐planting seeds seedlings. We conclude conceptualising drone‐assisted be embedded within a SESs management framework. Ultimately, argue offer ‘boutique’ approach supports, rather than replaces, traditional techniques.
