Abstract The main hypothesis of this study in older adults is that repeated walks a forest but not an urban environment for one month lead to reduced chronic stress compared the previous without any intervention. This was achieved by measurement cumulative cortisol concentrations hair. Older both sexes (n=54; 71±6.2 years) participated randomized, parallel-group trial. They were randomly assigned or walking group. completed two 40-minute sessions per week over month. Hair samples and morning, as well afternoon salivary samples, collected at baseline following interventions. A significant reduction hair observed during month, indicating decreased stress. Salivary group only. No differences alpha-amylase activity state anxiety scores noticed. Walking activities had no negative impact on diurnal rhythmicity markers. Quality life measures showed improvements emotional well-being correlation found between certain quality dimensions groups. Repeated affect objective evidenced lower improved well-being. These findings encourage incorporating forest-based interventions into mental health programs enhance well-being, cognitive functions, coping.

Abstract Global change impacts on disturbances can strongly compromise the capacity of forests to provide ecosystem services society. In addition, many in Europe are simultaneously provided by forests, emphasizing importance multifunctionality forest assessments. To address policies and management, spatially explicit risk analyses that consider multiple needed. However, we do not yet know which most at from Europe, where respective hotspots are, nor main disturbance agents detrimental provisioning Europe's forests. Here, quantify losing important (timber supply, carbon storage, soil erosion control outdoor recreation) (windthrows, bark beetle outbreaks wildfires) a continental scale. We find up 12% service supply is current disturbances. Soil highest risk, windthrow agent posing risk. Disturbances challenge threatening 19.8 Mha (9.7%) Our results highlight priority areas for management aiming safeguard sustainable services.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the essential role of urban and rural green spaces for societies coping with global public health crisis. During this particular time, a significant body research was devoted to human–nature relationships, as well use importance spaces, both from management visitors’ perspectives, along vital nature in human wellbeing. Furthermore, experience induced new paradigms spatial planning, forest protected areas seeing crucial shaping long-term socio-environmental resilience sustainability. Thus, after official end pandemic, our study aimed provide systematic review international related within context focusing on those published between 2020 2023. literature search SCOPUS Web Science databases conducted 16 May A dataset 161 articles analyzed using two-stage analysis. The link between subjective well-being (SWB) and forest visits is increasingly driving the development preservation of restorative environments in numerous countries. However, there limited knowledge regarding effect people's preferences for patterns activities on this connection. Here we investigated whether associations exist certain features activities, SWB increase stress reduction response to visits. A nationwide digital survey was administered a representative sample Slovak population. recollection-based data obtained from one thousand respondents were analysed through agglomerative clustering ordinal regression. analyses revealed that improved associated with uneven-aged forests, smell, as well recreational, but not provisioning activities. respective interrelationships explained up 20% after results suggest study findings can be generalized real-world forests management contribute visitors by shaping diversity woodlands their sensory experiences.

Understanding the effects of environment on mental health older adults is crucial in an aging society. Previous research concerning restorative benefits forests almost entirely omitted as primary target group and typically involved forest visits, which were largely restricted during COVID-19 pandemic. Here we investigated individual walks aged 60 years or ( N = 54). A randomized parallel intervention study was conducted with one walking other built-up city centres. Each participant completed eight 40-min 1 month. Significant improvements cognitive flexibility heart rate variability (HRV) autonomic nervous system functioning indicator established forest-walking group. The relationship between HRV modulated by ambient temperature. shows that access to crises can support a vulnerable demographic.

Forest edges, which serve as transition zones between forests and adjacent land cover types, are essential for providing wildlife habitats delivering a range of ecosystem services, including cultural benefits such recreation welfare people. This study evaluates the economic value these services (CESs) in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. Despite increasing development pressures driven by urban expansion, social ecological significance forest edges remains underexplored. By applying travel cost medical expense substitution methods, this estimates specifically recreation, at approximately KRW 65 billion, healing function around 896.5 billion across Gyeonggi-do. These results highlight need balanced planning regulations to safeguard sustain their contributions public health well-being. revealing hidden aims guide policies that promote sustainable use improve quality life residents rapidly urbanizing areas.
