While the toxicity of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) has been demonstrated, studies focusing on plastic leachates (PLs) in isolation remain limited. Herein, we developed a multifactor, multieffect, multilevel meta-analytic model (3M) to systematically evaluate PLs aquatic animals examine impacts multiple influencing factors. Six biochemical functions (survival, growth, development, reproduction, behavior, physiology) 20 factors (plastic characteristics, environmental conditions, animal traits) were analyzed. The results revealed that significantly impaired animals, with an overall effect -28% (-40, -16%) survival, 10% (-18, -2%) 30% (-44, 13% (-25, reproduction. PL was positively correlated size concentration influenced by polymer type, biodegradability, aging leaching conditions. Notably, marine species showed greater sensitivity than freshwater species, primary consumers more vulnerable secondary consumers. Future research should prioritize environmentally relevant concentrations, standardized procedures, transparent reporting By identifying key drivers toxicity, our findings provide valuable foundation for future efforts develop effective strategies mitigating toxicity.

Although sediments are important reservoirs of plastics, most the ecotoxicological studies on these contaminants focused organisms living in water column, while only a smaller number evidence concerns plastic impact benthic species. Therefore, this study compared multigenerational effects sediment-dwelling midge Chironomus riparius exposed to both virgin polystyrene microbeads (22,400-224,000 plastics/kg dry weight), and mixtures (40-420 weight) collected from four main tributaries Po River (Ticino, Adda, Oglio Mincio Rivers, Northern Italy) evaluate role played by other characteristics related physical determining their toxicity as opposed concentration alone. The modified Chironomid Life-Cycle Toxicity Test (OECD 233) was used Emergence Development Rates, Fecundity Fertility.
