Plastic Leachates Disproportionately Impair Aquatic Animals: A Multifactor, Multieffect, and Multilevel Meta-analytic Model

While
the
toxicity
of
microplastics
(MPs)
and
nanoplastics
(NPs)
has
been
demonstrated,
studies
focusing
on
plastic
leachates
(PLs)
in
isolation
remain
limited.
Herein,
we
developed
a
multifactor,
multieffect,
multilevel
meta-analytic
model
(3M)
to
systematically
evaluate
PLs
aquatic
animals
examine
impacts
multiple
influencing
factors.
Six
biochemical
functions
(survival,
growth,
development,
reproduction,
behavior,
physiology)
20
factors
(plastic
characteristics,
environmental
conditions,
animal
traits)
were
analyzed.
The
results
revealed
that
significantly
impaired
animals,
with
an
overall
effect
-28%
(-40,
-16%)
survival,
10%
(-18,
-2%)
30%
(-44,
13%
(-25,
reproduction.
PL
was
positively
correlated
size
concentration
influenced
by
polymer
type,
biodegradability,
aging
leaching
conditions.
Notably,
marine
species
showed
greater
sensitivity
than
freshwater
species,
primary
consumers
more
vulnerable
secondary
consumers.
Future
research
should
prioritize
environmentally
relevant
concentrations,
standardized
procedures,
transparent
reporting
By
identifying
key
drivers
toxicity,
our
findings
provide
valuable
foundation
for
future
efforts

effective
strategies
mitigating
toxicity.
