Agricultural simplification continues to expand at the expense of more diverse forms agriculture. This simplification, for example, in form intensively managed monocultures, poses a risk keeping world within safe and just Earth system boundaries. Here, we estimated how agricultural diversification simultaneously affects social environmental outcomes. Drawing from 24 studies 11 countries across 2655 farms, show five strategies focusing on livestock, crops, soils, noncrop plantings, water conservation benefit (e.g., human well-being, yields, food security) biodiversity, ecosystem services, reduced externalities) We found that applying multiple creates positive outcomes than individual management alone. To realize these benefits, well-designed policies are needed incentivize adoption unison.

This study investigates how exposure to short and long-term measures of rainfall shocks past crop diversification decisions influence subsequent in Malawi Tanzania. We use balanced household panel data combined with corresponding historical monthly weather achieve our aim. Crop is studied as a state-contingent risky investment decision that households make before the state nature revealed. model using correlated dynamic random effects Poisson Tobit models control for unobserved heterogeneity plus initial conditions may across space time. establish smallholder farmers Tanzania respond by diversifying their portfolios are state-dependent. Thus, knowledge experience gained from have elevated chances intensify adapt recurrent shocks. Heterogeneity analysis reveals relatively better-off sufficient land non-land assets greater extent diversify portfolio post-drought shock exposure. Agricultural expansion and intensification worldwide has caused a reduction in ecological infrastructures for insects, herbaceous plants, vertebrate insectivores, among other organisms. Agriculture is recognized as one of the key influences biodiversity decline, initiatives such European Green Deal highlight need to reduce ecosystem degradation. Among fruit crops, grapes are considered most intensive agricultural systems with greatest economic relevance. This study presents compilation management practices enhance performance, which applies generally sector and, particular, viticulture, concerning diversity semi-natural habitats, soil management, chemical control strategies pesticides used cultivation. Through critical review, this identifies set recommendations performance their corresponding effects, contributing dissemination options boost performance. The results opportunities future investigations determining needed conditions ensure both enhancement productive gains, understanding long-term effects innovative biodiversity-friendly approaches.

South and Southeast Asia host almost half of the world's undernourished people. Food agricultural systems in these regions are highly dependent on production consumption staple cereals such as rice, maize wheat. More diverse farming can potentially improve rural people's nutrition, while reducing environmental impact agriculture. Yet, it remains uncertain whether farm diversification is always most suitable viable strategy for all types smallholder farms. We use generalised linear regression models to analyse strategies 4772 households Cambodia, India, Lao PDR Vietnam. Our analysis twofold focuses first drivers diversification, second, impacts other livelihood dietary diversity. find that (1) significantly influenced by climate variables, including rainfall patterns, well household characteristics size education level; (2) market orientation off-farm income generation individual However, their relative effects resulted size. Specifically, positive effect diversity was larger smaller farms, decreased farms may diet more increasing engagement activities markets. These findings highlight represent substantial determinants decisions, suggesting importance understanding considering type situational context when targeting interventions improving livelihoods.

Abstract Agriculture is vulnerable to extreme weather shocks. Climate change increases both the frequency and intensity of such To safeguard farmers' income food production, climate adaptation measures are required. This article aims examine effectiveness crop diversification as an measure, using Italy a case study. We apply control function approach panel dataset 20,790 Italian farms, which considers (i) decision (ii) influence on levels risk. find that, while specialisation can increase income, reduces risk most effectively when growing four different crops. At this level diversification, approximately 29% lower opposed monoculture farming. Although Common Agricultural Policy's greening payments for make sense from ecological risk‐reducing point view, we that they potentially insufficient cover loss expected diversification. While in general, no specific benefit terms shock‐induced risks. may be because price following shock buffers its adverse effect. However, identifying reasons requires further research.

Abstract Transitioning to low‐input agricultural systems such as organic farming has been acknowledged a way mitigate negative effects of agriculture on biodiversity. However, the speed, magnitude and context dependence biodiversity recovery after converting remain uncertain. In this study, we explored response plant communities time since transition in variety production contexts. Using spatially replicated space‐for‐time substitution design, surveyed small‐grain cereal ley fields conventional farms, distributed along independent gradients proportion seminatural grasslands landscapes. We selected set traits explore mechanism potential lag that conversion. These were characterize sensitivity species inputs their ability respond swiftly environmental changes. found an increase richness evenness with increasing farming, similar but less pronounced pattern leys. After 30 years continuous harboured more than twice number newly converted fields. Importantly, insect pollination, herbicides dispersal capacity plants modulated This suggests both management biotic interactions shape community structure practices over time. Policy implications . Our study highlights benefits for diversity are likely take decades become substantial slow be driven by gradual improvement habitat quality conversion species' limitation. Assessments should therefore consider delay avoid underestimating its performance. Farmers also supported during ecological transitional phase which yield‐enhancing ecosystem services reliant might build up.
