Abstract Cover crops (CCs) can reduce nitrogen (N) loss to subsurface drainage and be reimagined as bioenergy for renewable natural gas production carbon (C) benefits (fossil fuel substitution C storage). Little information is available on the large-scale adoption of winter rye these purposes. To investigate impacts in North Central US, we used Root Zone Water Quality Model simulate corn-soybean rotations with without across 40 sites. The simulations were interpolated a five-state area (IA, IL, IN, MN, OH) counties Mississippi River basin, which consists ∼8 million ha potential CCs artificially drained fields (more than 63 total). Harvesting fertilized before soybean planting this N loads Gulf Mexico by 27% relative no CCs, provide 18 Mg yr −1 biomass-equivalent 0.21 EJ biogas energy content or 3.5 times 2022 US cellulosic biofuel production. Capturing CO 2 from digesting region sequestering it underground geologic reservoirs could mitigate 7.5 . Nine clusters (hotspots) identified an example implementing CC industrial scale where 400 Gg sourced within 121 km radius. Hotspots consisted roughly 20% region’s ∼50% both reduction biomass. These results suggest that would substantially contribute goals reducing Mexico, increasing production, providing benefits.

Energy from biogas is widely available, inexpensive, and often contributes to waste management, making it one of the most promising renewable energy sources. The main factors influencing this process’ efficiency include substrates’ chemical composition, temperature, digester load. This paper presents possibilities offered by a plant built at farm specialising in dairy cows. dependence power generated micro on its technical parameters was analysed detail. Studies carried out authors an agricultural microgas (with electrical output 40 kW) have shown that they are designed maintain continuous production, despite changing process such as mass level, height, temperature or slurry flow into digester. However, point view amount electricity generated, changes would be made design plant. Firstly, more powerful generator installed cover requirements equipment so close rated capacity still sent grid. Secondly, replacing two existing agitators digestion (9 kW each) with lower (e.g., four 4.5 necessary. These should programmed operates any given time (the operating agitator depend composition digestate).

Abstract Energy cover crops for biogas production through anaerobic digestion (AD) are inserted between two primary crops. They replace either bare soil or nonharvested crops, and their management is usually intensified to produce more biomass. allow the of renewable energy as well digestate, used an organic fertilizer, without directly competing with food production. Abstract Anaerobic digestion is developing in various countries worldwide to produce renewable energy. In addition, the resulting digestates provide readily available nutrients when applied cropping systems as fertilizers. The introduction of a biogas plant on farm can induce land cover changes, relation production feedstock for and/or modification farming system. aim this study was therefore characterize and quantify changes farms associated with plants France. We combined two national spatialized databases: Land Parcel Identification System (yearly French at parcel scale identifier per parcel) SINOE database (biogas location year start‐up). showed that, average, were limited, an increase maize areas (+3.4% total areas) compensated by decrease wheat rapeseed (−1.8% −1.9%, respectively), but certain variability. regulation market limiting use dedicated energy crops seems have limited France compared other countries. However, we elaborated typology characterized five clusters across country. main one (67% farms) corresponded unchanged after plant. four contrasting example, or grassland areas, strong replacement winter barley. diversity driving factors behind these deserve be better studied understood through further farmer surveys.

Abstract The aim of this study was to assess positive or negative impacts anaerobic digestion (AD) on water quality using a systemic approach. To end, we used the agro-hydrological model Topography-based Nitrogen Transfer and Transformation (TNT2), spatially explicit that simulates nitrogen flows at watershed scale daily time step. Four scenarios were constructed analyzed: baseline before introduction AD (S0), with adjusted fertilization (S1), unadjusted (S2), agroecological (S3). results showed that, when spreading practices similar an equivalent amount effective applied, digested pig slurry generally had predicted nitrate leaching undigested slurry. In addition, replacing catch crops energy cover little impact quality. Scenario S3 most favorable one for biogas production, but not soil organic storage food feed production. This study’s strength is its approach, which considered both environmental agronomic aspects scenarios.
