Additive manufacturing (AM) has gained extensive attention and tremendous research due to its advantages of fabricating complex-shaped parts without the need casting mold. However, distortion is a known issue for many AM technologies, which decreases precision as-built parts. Like fusion welding, local high-energy input generates residual stresses, can adversely affect fatigue performance To best authors' knowledge, comprehensive review does not exist regarding stresses dedicated AM, despite some work explored interrelationship between two. The present aimed fill in identified knowledge gap, by first describing evolution range processes, second assessing their influencing factors. This allows us elucidate formation mechanisms from both micro- macro-scales. Moreover, approaches have been successfully adopted mitigate are reviewed.
