Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic presented a great challenge for individuals around the globe, and particularly vulnerable populations such as autistic children. This qualitative study explored experience of children (both verbal minimally verbal) their families during in August-October 2020 through lens 18 parents recruited from an opportunistic follow-up randomized controlled trial. Findings revealed that was detrimental to mental health most parents. School closures, disrupted routines concerns virus were believed by be responsible increased child’s behaviour challenges anxiety, resulting changes acquired skills development tics some. However, other reported one-to-one interaction with child improved social communication. Additionally, felt more able cope situation when supported partner, support services schools. findings highlight benefits experienced pandemic. They provide valuable insights into potential areas warrant attention preparing future emergencies. Enhancing our ability respond needs families, establishing policies can well-being should prioritised effectively address challenges.

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak has had a profoundly negative impact on people all over the world, particularly those with disabilities such as autism. However, there are gaps in research understanding of COVID-19 this population and support required. Aim: To explore evidence available pandemic caregivers children Method: A scoping review methodology using Arksey O'Malley framework was employed. Five electronic databases from March 2020 to December 2022 were reviewed. Two thousand two hundred six articles retrieved primary search terms: (population), autism (diagnosis) (context). Following screening titles, abstracts articles, 36 included final review. Thematic content qualitative analysis completed. Results: Preferred reporting items for systematic reviews meta-analyses extension (PRISMA-ScR) guided findings. Three main themes identified: (1) caregiver's mental health wellbeing, (2) response remote care (3) caregiver resilience. Conclusion: affected their families regarding changes routine, difficulties emotional states. little been conducted upper-middle-income countries South Africa. Contribution: findings carry practical implications that extend beyond pandemic, political instability or natural disasters may present similar stressors families.

Objective: Widespread mental health impacts occurred early in the COVID-19 pandemic, especially for those with pre-existing conditions. Less is known about how these groups fared later phases and post- pandemic. We compared late-pandemic on adults ill-health other vulnerabilities to enable better service planning future crises.Design methods: This mixed-method study surveyed 532 online, 2021-2022. All participants self-reported ill-heath either formal autism diagnosis (181), self-identification of (167), or were non-autistic (184). Self-ratings health, need healthcare ease access during COVID across demographics. Responses an open question analysed using Reflexive Thematic Analysis.Results: Most reported poor high needs great difficulty obtaining appropriate care Significant differences found age, neurotype education level: younger worse health; people neurodivergent conditions than (NDCs) greater healthcare; NDCs lower levels care. analysis identified four themes/sub-themes: “Greater most”; “Exceptions rule: improvements some (mainly autistic people)”; “Navigating a scarce resource”; “Telehealth: enabler some, barrier others”. Conclusions: Having condition rather status was more important determining pandemic impacts.
