Association between personality traits and symptoms of depression and anxiety via emotional regulation and distress tolerance

The
Big
Five
personality
traits
have
shown
associations
with
symptoms
of
depression
and
anxiety
among
college
students,
but
it
is
unclear
which
factors
mediate
these
relationships.
Past
research
suggests
that
psychological
distress
closely
related
to
difficulties
in
affect
regulation
(e.g.,
low
tolerance).
Therefore,
the
present
study
examined
between
via
emotion
tolerance.
Participants
were
694
(81.4%
females;
Mean
age
=
23.12
[SD
2.75])
Argentinian
students
who
completed
an
online
survey
examining
mental
health
variables.
A
sizeable
percentage
endorsed
moderate
severe
(45.1%)

(25.9%).
Utilizing
path
analyses,
we
found
appraisal,

dimension
tolerance,
atemporally
mediated
association
emotional
stability
depression/anxiety
(i.e.,
higher
levels
→
appraisal
tolerance
fewer
depression/anxiety).
Further,
expressive
suppression
(a
regulation)
significantly
agreeableness
extraversion)
(higher
agreeableness/extraversion
lower
use
depression).
Taken
together,
results
suggest
stability,
extraversion
could
protect
from
development
maladaptive
strategies
(particularly
appraisal).
These
findings
highlight
relevance
intervention
specifically
tailored
improve
for
those
undergoing
problems.

Abstract
Purpose:
Depressive
disorder
during
early
adulthood
has
been
a
rising
public
health
concern,
potentially
further
compounded
by
the
COVID-19
pandemic.
Using
nationally
representative
large
survey
samples,
this
study
addressed
knowledge
gaps
in
how
affected
depressive
among
U.S.
young
adults.
Methods:
The
analysis
included
348,994
non-institutionalized
adults
aged
18-34
years
from
Behavioral
Risk
Factor
Surveillance
System
for
2018-2022.
Changes
prevalence
of
diagnosed
before
and
were
assessed
weighted
bi-variate
using
Rao-Scott
Chi-Square
test,
with
multivariable
logistic
regression
models
fitted
to
assess
magnitude
COVID-19.
Results:
Overall,
increased
13.7%
(p<0.001)

This
study
examines
the
determinants
of
self-reported
health
(SRH)
among
1,674
middle-aged
Canadians
using
data
from
seventh
wave
World
Values
Survey
(WVS-7)
collected
between
2017
and
2022.
A
probit
regression
model
was
employed
to
analyse
influence
various
factors
on
outcomes.
The
findings
highlight
that
perceived
socioeconomic
status
(PSES)
plays
a
significant
role
in
health,
with
individuals
higher
classes
reporting
significantly
lower
probabilities
poor
health.
Contrary
expectations,
traditional
demographic
such
as
foreign-born
status,
gender,
marital
language
proficiency,
ethnicity,
education
levels
do
not
predict
analysis
interaction
terms
PSES
these
variables
revealed
no
effects,
indicating
impact
is
consistent
across
different
subgroups.
Additionally,
being
having
children
at
home
were
identified
protective
against
Regional
variations
mostly
insignificant,
except
for
Prince
Edward
Island,
where
residents
less
likely
report
underscores

conditions
