Plant Biostimulants Enhance Tomato Resilience to Salinity Stress: Insights from Two Greek Landraces

Salinity,
one
of
the
major
abiotic
stresses
in
plants,
significantly
hampers
germination,
photosynthesis,
biomass
production,
nutrient
balance,
and
yield
staple
crops.
To
mitigate
impact
such
stress
without
compromising
quality,
sustainable
agronomic
practices
are
required.
Among
these
practices,
seaweed
extracts
(SWEs)
microbial
biostimulants
(PGRBs)
have
emerged
as
important
categories
plant
(PBs).
This
research
aimed
at
elucidating
effects
on
growth,
yield,
status
two
Greek
tomato
landraces
(‘Tomataki’
‘Thessaloniki’)
following
treatments
with
Ascophyllum
nodosum
extract
‘Algastar’
PGPB
‘Nitrostim’
formulation.
Plants
were
subjected
to
bi-weekly
applications
supplied
solutions:
0.5
mM
(control)
30
NaCl.
The
results
revealed
that
different
mode(s)
action
PBs
impacted
tolerance
landraces,
since
‘Tomataki’
was
benefited
only
from
SWE
application
while
‘Thessaloniki’
showed
significant
increase
fruit
numbers
average
weight
both
NaCl
root
zone.
In
conclusion,
induced
by
salinity
can
be
mitigated
increasing
through
PBs,
a
tool
for
productivity
enhancement,
which
aligns
well
strategy
European
Green
Deal.

Plant
biostimulants
constitute
a
promising
environmentally
friendly
alternative
for
increasing
crop
yield
and
tolerance
to
unfavorable
conditions.
Among
various
types
of
such
formulations,
botanical
extracts
are
gaining
more
recognition
as
products
supporting
plant
performance.
Moreover,
novel
tools
cold-plasma
or
low-pressure
microwave
plasma
discharge
being
proposed
techniques
that
might
improve
their
efficacy.
Elucidation
the
biostimulant's
mode
action
requires
complex
research
at
molecular
level.
Transcriptional
changes
occurring
after
biostimulant
spraying
be
investigated
using
RT-qPCR.
However,
this
technique
data
normalization
against
stable
endogenous
controls.
Here,
we
tested
expression
stability
ten
candidate
genes
in
soybean
plants
exposed
treatment.
Selection
best-performing
reference
was
conducted
four
algorithms
(geNorm,
NormFinder,
BestKeeper,
ΔCt
method).
According
obtained
results,
Bic-C2
(RNA-binding
protein
Bicaudal-C)
CYP
(cyclophilin
type
peptidyl-prolyl
cis–trans
isomerase)
showed
highest
stability,
while
EF1B
(elongation
factor
1-beta)
fluctuated
most
among
set
genes.

BC204
is
a
citrus‐based
plant
extract
applied
as
biostimulant
on
variety
of
species
in
South
Africa,
China,
and
Australia.
Although
there
are
reports
that
it
elicits
physiological
responses
such
an
increase
crop
yield,
abiotic
biotic
stress
tolerance,
fruit
quality,
no
molecular
data
available
to
explain
the
specific
mechanisms
underlying
these
effects.
In
this
study,
RNA
sequencing
