This paper presents the outcomes of "Soundscape Attributes Translation Project" (SATP), an international initiative addressing critical research gap in soundscape descriptors translations for cross-cultural studies. Focusing on eighteen languages – namely: Arabic, Chinese, Croatian, Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, and Vietnamese study employs a four-step procedure to evaluate reliability validity translated descriptors. The introduces three-tier confidence level system (Low, Medium, High) based "adjusted angles", which are measure proposed correct circumplex model (i.e., pleasant-eventful space ISO 12913 series) given language. Results reveal that most successfully maintain quasi-circumplex structure original model, ensuring robust validity. Chinese (Mandarin), Turkish achieve "High" level. demonstrate varying levels, highlighting importance preliminary translation. significantly contributes standardized methodologies perception research, emphasizing pivotal role adjusted angles within accuracy dimensions attributes) locations. SATP offers insights into complex interplay language meaning environmental sounds, opening avenues further research.

Abstract In protected natural areas (PNAs), at popular scenic spots, visitors often contribute to noise pollution through their behaviour. Decibel-based sensors don't fully capture this, necessitating a more holistic approach. A mixed-methods framework, based on the ISO 12913 series, was tested in four European PNAs. During five soundwalks (7–12 km long) organised by Silenzi Quota initiative, 443 questionnaires were gathered across 28 evaluation points, alongside corresponding binaural measurements. Acoustic environments as silent LAeq=31 dB and loud LAeq=76 observed, eliciting perceptions from very calm chaotic. Psychophysical measures (loudness, sharpness, roughness, fluctuation strength tonality) calculated. The impact of perceived sound source dominance, visual landscape quality psychophysical environmental acoustic features soundscape pleasantness eventfulness analysed via Linear Mixed-Effects Models (LMMs). Perceived type data- data-based models outperformed those pressure level metrics. Amongst sounds nature, water demonstrated strongest association with higher eventfulness. Presence human sounds, associated increased tonality, major factor driving perception chaotic soundscapes, revealing detrimental effect behaviour experience

Urban noise pollution significantly degrades people’s health and well-being and, furthermore, traditional reduction strategies often overlook individual perception differences. This study proposed to explore the role of eco-acoustic indices in capturing interplay between biophony, geophony, anthrophony, their relationship with classical acoustic metrics perceived soundscapes within a University Campus (University “Mila-no-Bicocca”, Italy). The area is divided eight different sites “Piazza della Scienza” square. Sound measurements surveys conducted June 2023 across four paved adjacent courtyards involved 398 participants (51.7% female, 45.6% male, 2.7% other). main sources included road traffic, technical installations, human activity, where traffic was more prominent at street-level (Sites 1–4) installations dominated underground (6–8). Human activity most noticeable Sites 4–8, especially Site 5, which showed highest levels. A circumplex model revealed that were less pleasant eventful than courtyards. Pairwise comparisons variability significant differences among sites, locations offering quieter environments. Eco-acoustic analysis identified two site groups: one linked noisiness spectral features, other intensity distribution metrics. Technical people, noises distinct correlations indices, influencing emotional responses like stimulation liveliness. These findings emphasize need integrate subjective perceptions objective soundscape descriptions.

The study presents findings of a data collection campaign conducted in 61 residential buildings England during the summer 2022, aiming to investigate factors influencing 1) window usage, and 2) activation deactivation mechanical ventilation systems, 3) correlation between soundscape, landscape, individual noise sensitivity, significance attributed external acoustic environment determining usage. survey, covering 55 dwellings reliant on windows for ventilation, highlights that opening is predominantly driven by perceived indoor air quality (PIAQ) thermal comfort concerns. Conversely, factor ranks first prompting closure, alongside considerations related cold, safety concerns, excessive drafts, insect intrusion. Within 6 utilizing manually controlled needs emerges as predominant triggering system activation, followed PIAQ. Reasons primarily involve preference opening, and, secondarily, or discomfort, with participant-voiced concerns about operational costs. usage mainly independent sound sources, measured loudness, soundscape content. However, higher scores correlate greater willingness open an contact. Interestingly, sensitivity modulates importance attached context when interacting (odds ratio: 1.04). underscores need incorporating relevant models simulating closing behaviour.

The soundscape approach provides a basis for considering the holistic perception of sound environments in context. Whereas steady advancements have been made methods assessment and analysis, gap exists comparing soundscapes quantifying improvements multidimensional soundscape. To this end, there is need creation single value indices to compare quality which incorporate context, aural diversity, specific design goals given application. Just as variety decibel-based developed various purposes (e.g., LAeq, LCeq, L90, Lden, etc.), requires ability create original different uses, share common language understanding. Therefore, unified framework creating bespoke reference index measures proposed, allowing metrics be defined future. This based on four-step test-target paradigm wherein desired target distribution within circumplex, two-dimensional Kolmogorov-Smirnov distance used test an assessed against target. Applications implications are discussed, multi-objective optimisation method empirically defining proposed.
