Carbon sources in membrane bioreactor (MBR) significantly affect fouling by influencing microbial metabolic activities, mixed liquor characteristics, and community structure. This study explores the impact of chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentrations (200 120 mg/L) on denitrification, phosphorus removal, filtration performance, characteristics anaerobic/aerobic (A/O-MBR) anaerobic/anoxic (A/A-MBR) systems. Results revealed that higher COD reduced removal efficiency increased extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) production, index (FI), flux decline rates. Under these conditions, A/A-MBR exhibited lower compared to A/O-MBR. Correlation analysis showed strong relationships between FI EPS relative hydrophobicity (RH), as well protein content (PN) Zeta potential, highlighting a dominant factor fouling. 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing further demonstrated A/O-MBR enriched denitrifying bacteria more effectively than A/A-MBR. These findings suggest optimising can mitigate improve overall reactor performance.

This study presents the long-term performance evaluation of a full-scale hybrid membrane bioreactor (MBR)–nanofiltration (NF) system for treatment high-strength municipal landfill leachate from Istanbul–Şile Kömürcüoda facility. Over 16-month operational period, influent and effluent samples were analyzed key parameters, including chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N), total phosphorus (TP), suspended solids (SS), temperature. The MBR unit consistently achieved high removal efficiencies COD NH4+-N (93.5% 98.6%, respectively), while NF stage provided effective polishing, particularly phosphorus, maintaining TP above 95%. Seasonal analysis revealed that biological peaked during spring, likely due to optimal microbial conditions. To support intelligent control strategies, artificial neural network (ANN) models developed predict concentrations using parameters. best-performing ANN R2 values 0.861 0.796, respectively. model’s robustness was validated through RMSE, MAE, 95% confidence intervals. Additionally, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) Random Forest algorithms employed determine parameter importance nonlinear interactions. findings demonstrate integration systems with AI-based modeling can enhance efficiency forecasting capabilities management, offering resilient data-driven approach sustainable operation.
