Acetoin is a volatile organic compound, which class of metabolites produced by plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria. The mechanisms underlying growth promotion acetoin and its potential to induce saline stress tolerance in plants are poorly understood. Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. var. ramosa Hort.) seedlings hydronics pots under non-saline or conditions were foliar-sprayed with 10 mL 0 1 mg·mL−1 at 7 14 d after transplantation harvested the second spray. Shoots roots hydroponic lettuce 6 24 h treatment for RNA sequencing. Seedlings sprayed showed more vigorous growth, higher shoot root biomass than those controls, both hydronic pot modes. transcriptomic analysis revealed application resulted 177 differentially expressed genes (39 upregulated 138 downregulated) shoots 397 (112 285 roots. These DEGs, mainly involved hormone signal transduction mitogen-activated protein kinase, have trigger plants’ responses various environmental stimuli, including developmental signals. Under conditions, acetoin-treated increased net leaf photosynthesis activities several defense enzymes, indicating that enhances fundamental plant’s defenses, especially against salinity. In summary, appears act through complex interplay genetic biochemical mechanisms, influencing key signaling pathways physiological processes lead improved seedlings.
