A growing body of research identifies emotion differentiation—the ability to specifically identify one’s emotions—as a key skill for well-being. High differentiation is associated with healthier and more effective regulation emotions, low has been documented in several forms psychopathology. However, the lion’s share this focused on adult samples, even though approximately 50% mental disorders onset before age 18. This review curates what we know about development its implications youth health. I first published studies investigating how develops across childhood adolescence, as well testing relations between health samples. Emerging evidence suggests that actually falls counterintuitive pattern merits further investigation. Additionally, find health, but some instability results emerged. then open questions limit our current understanding differentiation, including (i) lack clarity valid measurement (ii) potential third variables could explain mental-health (e.g., mean negative affect, IQ, personality, circularity outcomes), (iii) clear mechanistic models regarding it facilitates conclude discussion future directions can address work toward interventions treat (or prevent)

We are in dire need of innovative tools for reducing the global burden psychopathology. Emerging evidence suggests that analyzing language (i.e., words people use) can grant insight into an individual's emotional experiences, their ability to regulate emotions, and even current experiences As such, linguistic analyses people's everyday word use may be a diagnostic marker well-being, manipulating could foster adaptive emotion regulation mental health. Given ubiquity life, such language-based measuring intervening health advance how we identify treat illnesses at large scale. In this paper, I outline promise approach key problems must solve if make it reality. particular, summarize connecting language, emotion, three constructs: sentiment valence one's language), distancing using separate oneself from distressing stimuli), differentiation specifically emotions). also open questions attention each these constructs area research as whole. Overall, believe future is bright application psycholinguistic approaches detection intervention.

Emotion dysregulation is a characteristic central to borderline personality disorder (BPD). Valuably, verbal behaviour can provide unique perspective for studying emotion in BPD, with recent research suggesting that the varieties of words one actively uses (i.e., active vocabularies [EVs]) reflect habitual experience and potential therein. Accordingly, present examined associations between BPD EVs across two studies. Study 1 (N = 530) comprised large non-clinical sample recruited from online forums, whereby traits were measured via self-report. 2 64 couples) consisted mixed-gender romantic couples which woman had diagnosis, as well control group couples. In both studies, participants' behaviours analysed calculate their EVs. Results studies revealed be associated larger negative EV using broad variation words), remained robust when controlling general vocabulary size affect word frequency 2. The association was insensitive context. Limitations this include: 1) absence clinical group; 2) typical constraints surrounding word-counting approaches; 3) cross-sectional design (causality cannot inferred). Our findings contribute theory broader language literature. Importantly, these new insight into how individuals manifesting attend represent emotional experiences, could used inform practice.

Abstract Acceptance-based skills are widely used in psychological treatments, yet evidence regarding the effectiveness of acceptance as a standalone strategy for downregulating negative emotions is mixed. This study compared two emotion regulation from Dialectical-Behavior Therapy (DBT): an acceptance-based skill that encourages radical reality (i.e., Radical Acceptance) and cognitive-change-based reappraisal events Check Facts). In single session, 92 healthy young adults were randomly assigned to use ( N = 46) or check facts cope with personally distressing event. Before after participants completed independent task involving exposure aversive stimuli assess their ability engage cognitive reappraisal. The results showed affect induced by personal event fully returned baseline among those who acceptance, but not facts. On task, enhanced both (particularly nonjudgmental awareness) downregulate more effectively than These findings suggest only functions robust method also catalyst other strategies such based on change.

Abstract Self-reports remain affective science’s only direct measure of subjective experiences. Yet, little research has sought to understand the psychological process that transforms experience into self-reports. Here, we propose by framing these self-reports as dynamic decisions, scientists may leverage computational tools decision-making research, sequential sampling models specifically, better disentangle from noisy decision processes constitute self-report. We further outline how such an approach could help probe specific mechanisms underlie important moderators (e.g., contextual differences, individual and emotion regulation) discuss adopting this framework generate insight more broadly facilitate reciprocal collaborations between towards a comprehensive integrative science.
