The common bottlenose dolphin is a cosmopolitan species that can be found worldwide in all oceans except polar and sub-polar waters. This wide distribution associated with certain level of morphological variation, which seems consistent the presence globally distributed pelagic/offshore ecotype several coastal/inshore ecotypes along continental shelf. ABSTRACT Effective management of protected species requires a comprehensive understanding their ecology. Within the Fiordland (Te Moana o Atawhenua) Marine Area (FMA) in south‐western Aotearoa/New Zealand, two four recognised bottlenose dolphin ( Tursiops truncatus ) subpopulations are considered resident to discrete fiord systems. Opportunistic sightings outside Patea/Doubtful and Tamatea/Dusky Sound complexes, however, indicate these occupy larger space than is currently recognised. To investigate use remote spaces FMA, passive acoustic monitoring equipment was deployed six southern fiords. Acoustic data were collected between February 2022 November 2023 using types devices: F‐PODs detect click trains odontocetes SoundTraps collect recordings explore variety call types. We used automated classifiers/detectors manual browsing various vocalisation better understand occupancy at each site, we constructed hierarchical Bayesian model estimate detection probabilities different collection signal approaches. Photo‐identification identify individual dolphins areas, differences visual methods explored. This study demonstrates that dolphins, including regularly fiords not part habitat range may often FMA. increased spatial ecology underscores need for re‐evaluation potential threats throughout this region.

ABSTRACT Knowledge on the distribution of species provides baseline information towards their conservation and management human activities affecting them. For endangered species, such as Risso's dolphin ( Grampus griseus ) in Mediterranean Sea, highlighting areas within range to which individuals regularly return can reveal patterns site fidelity. dolphin, this is scarce Sea. Here, photo identification was used assess fidelity Garraf submarine canyon system (NW Sea). Data collected along 237 boat surveys between 2017 2023 resulted 56 sightings 364 unique individuals. Eight Site Fidelity Indices (SFIs) were calculated for each individual based three indicators: Occurrence, Permanence Periodicity. A divisive hierarchical clustering analysis eight SFIs detect different degrees residency. Individuals seen more than 2 months divided into clusters defined seasonal residents, regular occasional visitors, whereas only 1 month considered be transient. Bottlenose dolphins have a complex vocal repertoire that varies depending on behavioral context, social structure, group composition, and anthropogenic pressures. This current study describes the whistle characteristics of bottlenose for first time in South Adriatic Sea while assessing potential differences between geographically separated within neighbouring waters North Ionian Sea. The results show were similar Taranto Gulf (Italy) Boka Bay (Montenegro), despite their spatial differences. mean peak frequency was 10kHz each location minimum maximum ranged from 7 to 14kHz. average duration whistles 500 milliseconds. The Adriatic Sea is one of the Mediterranean areas most exposed to cumulative human stressors. This semienclosed and largely shallow basin has been subjected intensive exploitation destructive fishing practices for decades, resulting in biodiversity decline poor ecosystem health. Diversity cetaceans lower than other parts Mediterranean, extant dolphins whales have facing threats that include combined effects habitat loss degradation, prey depletion, incidental mortality injury caused by fisheries, anthropogenic noise, chemical contamination climate change. Here, we report information nine cetacean species known occur (classified as either regular, visitor or vagrant), plus three characterized a single record. For these species, review evidence from field research studies – with bias towards common bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus (by far intensively-studied this area). We also describe characterize main Adriatic, relying on recent literature well historical helps frame present status context past impacts (particularly extensive killing campaigns conducted until 1960s).
