Up to two thirds of people living in long-term care homes experience mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression. In addition, over half residents have cognitive impairment or dementia. However, the quality provided residential is often poor, use indictors lacking. As first step a larger project develop indicators for (MHICare project), this study aimed explore factors considered important understanding responding promoting well-being residents. Individual interviews small group discussions were conducted with twelve (both without dementia), eight family carers dementia, six home staff members, from across Australia. Qualitative data analysed using an inductive thematic analysis approach generate themes deductive map these Balanced Score Card indicator framework. Four main several inter-related identified: (1) Resident-related (Transitional impacts, Social connections active engagement, Pre-existing co-morbid conditions); (2) Care Communication Practices (Assessment strategies, Person-centred care, Cultural generational communication differences, Staff handover knowledge sharing); (3) Staff-related (Staff awareness, knowledge, practical skills training needs, values attitudes); (4) Organisational (Internal staffing levels, Access external professionals, Provision volunteer programs). Findings will inform key areas initial content homes. Once developed, potential highlight both strengths gaps current practices, drive improvement initiatives.

The coexistence of dementia and depression in older populations presents a complex clinical challenge, with each condition often exacerbating the other. Cognitive decline can intensify mood disturbances, untreated or recurring accelerates neurodegenerative processes. As is recognized risk factor for dementia, it crucial to address both conditions concurrently prevent further deterioration. Antidepressants are frequently used manage patients, some studies suggesting they offer neuroprotective benefits. These benefits include promoting neurogenesis, enhancing synaptic plasticity, reducing neuroinflammation, potentially slowing cognitive decline. Additionally, antidepressants have shown promise addressing Alzheimer's-related pathologies by amyloid-beta accumulation tau hyperphosphorylation. However, treatment-resistant remains significant particularly adults impairment. Many do not respond well standard antidepressant therapies due advanced changes. Conflicting findings from add uncertainty, research that may increase risk, especially when patients undiagnosed early-stage dementia. This article aims explore intricate relationship between examining risks use. We highlight urgent need personalized, comprehensive treatment strategies balance mental health improvement protection.

Background: Depression and dementia represent significant health challenges in older adults, affecting both quality of life independence, with a combined point prevalence 35%. Despite guidelines recommending antidepressants, their efficacy depressed patients remains controversial. Objective: This review primarily aims to determine the effect any-type antidepressant on level depression adults secondly if there is an antidepressants cognitive state, life, functionality old-age population dementia. Methods: A systematic meta-analysis was conducted RCTs, Medline, Embase, Cochrane Central Register Controlled Trials databases. Study participants were aged 65 older, diagnosed any type dementia, excluding those other severe psychiatric conditions or undergoing brain stimulation treatments. We used Risk-of-Bias tool GRADE framework for certainty evidence. Analysis involved standardized mean difference heterogeneous measures, 95% confidence intervals (CIs).Findings: Of 27,771 screened articles, 14 studies, totaling 1909 participants, mild treatment SSRI, SSNRI, atypical, tricyclic included. Due missing information, only 8 studies included quantitative synthesis, 617 participants. No evidence found (SMD -0.10 [-0.26, 0.07]), nor when subgrouped based severity level, secondary outcomes.Interpretation: did not find clinical treating dementia. Methodological might contribute this finding. Funding: specific funding received project. The authors supported by employment at respective institutions.Declaration Interest: All declare that they have no conflicts interest.

Late-onset psychiatric conditions, which emerge or are first diagnosed in older adulthood, present unique challenges. This review examines their prevalence, risk factors, and clinical presentations, providing a comprehensive overview of impact on adults. disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder (MDD), increasingly recognized as significant health concerns among Epidemiological trends show rising incidence, influenced by an aging population demographic changes. Abstract Background Integrating behavioural assessments with blood-based biomarkers (BBM) could improve diagnostic accuracy for Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) linked to early-stage neurodegenerative disease (NDD). This study investigates the potential of combining neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) BBM enhance differentiation between older adults MCI and those Normal Cognition (NC) in a multi-ethnic Southeast Asian cohort. Methods cross-sectional analyzed baseline data from Biomarkers Study, Singapore(BIOCIS). Data 678 participants (mean[SD]age 59.16[11.02]years, 39.50% males) NC were included. Behavioral assessed using Checklist (MBI-C) Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scales (DASS). Blood samples amyloid-beta (Aβ40, Aβ42), phosphorylated Tau (p-tau181), neurofilament light (NfL) glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). Regression models adjusted age, education, gender, cognitive status (CS) APOE-ε4 used. Discriminative power was evaluated area under curve (AUC) assess combined predictive behavioral biological markers CS, i.e., over CN. Results The included MBI-C scores (total, interest, mood, control) levels NfL, GFAP) significantly higher group, compared CN group. Elevated GFAP (OR:3.636, 95% CI:1.959, 6.751, p<0.001) MBI-C-Mood (OR:2.614, CI:1.538, 4.441, increased likelihood MCI. model, integrating NPS markers, showed strong discriminative ability (AUC = 0.786), 64.7% sensitivity 84.9% specificity at threshold 0.616, (AUC: 0.593) or 0.697) alone. Conclusions Relevance use achieved optimal distinguishing NC, associations GFAP, Mood scores, CS. These findings underscore neuroinflammation mood disturbances as critical factors early NDD, supporting importance dual-dimension screening strategies. represents novel effective approach detection due AD other dementias. integrated framework, leveraging both pathophysiological facilitates earlier diagnosis, potentially improving clinical decision-making enabling targeted disease-modifying therapies individuals disorders.
