Abstract An increasing number of real-world interventions aim to preemptively protect or inoculate people against misinformation. Inoculation research has demonstrated positive effects on misinformation resilience when measured immediately after treatment via messages, games, videos. However, very little is currently known about their long-term effectiveness and the mechanisms by which such decay over time. We start proposing three possible models driving resistance then report five pre-registered longitudinal experiments ( N total = 11,759) that investigate psychological inoculation time as well underlying mechanisms. find text-based video-based can remain effective for one month—whereas game-based appear more rapidly—and memory-enhancing booster enhance diminishing counter-misinformation interventions. Finally, we propose an integrated memory-motivation model, concluding researchers would benefit from integrating knowledge cognitive science memory design better counter durably at-scale.

Psychological inoculation interventions, which seek to pre-emptively build resistance against unwanted persuasion attempts, have shown promise in reducing susceptibility misinformation. However, as many people receive news from popular, mainstream ingroup sources (e.g., a left-wing person consuming media) may host misleading or false content, and be more persuasive, the impact of source effects on interventions demands attention. In this experiment, we find that although consumers are susceptible (non-political) misinformation political publishers pre-intervention, gamified successfully improves veracity discernment reduces both outgroup publishers.

Recent years have seen a surge in research on why people fall for misinformation and what can be done about it. Drawing framework that conceptualizes truth judgments of true false information as signal-detection problem, the current article identifies three inaccurate assumptions public scientific discourse misinformation: (1) People are bad at discerning from information, (2) partisan bias is not driving force misinformation, (3) gullibility to main factor underlying beliefs. Counter these assumptions, we argue quite good responses pervasive strong, skepticism against belief-incongruent much more pronounced than belief-congruent information. These conclusions significant implications person-centered interventions tackle
