Background: Research is limited regarding the relationship between adolescent substance use and polysubstance (SU/PSU) as well their outcomes later in adolescence, while accounting for early risk factors. This study explored substance-related psychosocial at age 17 associated with SU/PSU developmental trajectories a population-representative cohort from Quebec, Canada (N = 1593; 48.4% male), controlling preadolescent individual, familial, social included concurrent of alcohol (AL), cannabis (CA), other illicit drugs (ODs). Methods: Self-reported data were collected ages 12, 13, 15, 17. Latent growth modeling identified five trajectories: Non-Users (12.8%) four classes (5.8–37.5%) varying severity based on onset, frequency, type. Multinomial regression, using non-users reference group, assessed trajectory associations age-17 outcomes. Individual, factors 10–12 served control variables. Results: Adolescents high-risk showed most negative compared to lower-risk classes. Lower-risk higher maladjustment than non-users. Conclusions: The findings highlight dose–response late-adolescent outcomes, independent Results emphasize importance longitudinal studies that incorporate multiple substances better capture complexity teenagers’ involvement throughout adolescence.

Globally, millions of people suffer from various substance use disorders (SUD), including mono-and polydrug opioids and methamphetamine. Brain regions such as the cingulate cortex, infralimbic dorsal striatum, nucleus accumbens, basolateral central amygdala have been shown to play important roles in addiction-related behavioral changes. The concurrent or sequential usage of multiple substances during adolescence is a serious public health problem. Given the importance understanding interdependence in substance use adolescence, purpose this study to examine co-evolution cigarette smoking, alcohol, and marijuana within ever-changing landscape adolescent friendship networks, which are primary socialization context for use. Utilizing Stochastic Actor-Based models, we how simultaneous social processes co-evolve with drinking, networks using two school samples from early waves National Longitudinal Study Adolescent Adult Health (Add Health). We also estimate separate models examining effects one initiation cessation other each sample. Based on initial model results, simulate forward time by turning off key effect estimated at time, observe distribution changes. find evidence unilateral causal relationship subsequent smoking drinking behaviors, resulting behavior. However, little known about whether use, defined here as combustible tobacco cigarette within same hour alcohol, associated changes boost. The present study aimed address this gap.Young (N = 202, 52% female, mean age 21 years at time 1) provided ecological moments assessment (EMA) reports over two 7-day bursts spaced 1 year apart. In each report, participants rated levels before after smoking, indicated alcohol use. Mixed-effects location-scale modeling simultaneously tested variability related smoking events and/or compared smoking-only events. From decreased, on average. Overall, additions had nonsignificant associations these changes. well cigarette-cannabis co-use, were significantly greater within-person smoking. The benefits more erratic contexts co-use.
