Summary Objectives The COVID-19 pandemic has had unprecedented and deteriorating effects on the mental health of adolescents young adults. Various studies have described changes regarding substance abuse, but findings are conflicting. Study design We conducted a cross-sectional online survey nicotine, alcohol, illicit drug use. Methods From March to May 2023, 502 participants aged 14–24 from community-based sample completed questionnaire. Results found general trend declining or stable use during first 2 years pandemic; however, in third year (i.e., 2022), returned pre-pandemic levels exceeded it. Compared with adults (age 19–24), adolescents’ 14–18) increased more clearly. Participants who scored above cut-off screening measures for problematic showed pronounced increase cigarettes drugs not alcohol. Higher alcohol consumption lockdowns was associated likelihood current (odds ratio [OR]: 3.03) cannabis (OR: 2.60). Furthermore, individuals reported usage one psychotropic were likely their other substances as well 2.66–4.87). Conclusions Although optimally generalizable due retrospective format convenience sampling, our results support notion that special attention ought be paid certain subgroups such younger people those already exhibit pandemic. Following up post-pandemic trends is crucial developing prevention targeted interventions.

Early life stress (ELS) increases the risk of substance use disorder (SUD) in adulthood. The pathway from ELS to SUD is hypothesized be influenced by sex. We examine impact on adolescent first use, a common precursor adult SUDs, and test for sex differences relationship between alcohol, nicotine, marijuana. Individuals Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study (ABCD; N = 8608 US children aged 9-10 at baseline) were assessed multiple measures (Environmental, Family, Trauma), covariates (race/ethnicity, age months baseline, pubertal development score), use. Cox proportional hazards regression was performed total population stratified sex, generating adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) One unit increase Total scores significantly increased aHRs all substances. Dimensional analysis revealed associations with that differed across type ELS, substance. Females higher Environmental display significant substances, while males Trauma showed nicotine marijuana Findings highlight association illustrating consistency Family risk. Existing family-based prevention intervention strategies should consider addressing protection.

Background: Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) comprise a variety of products designed to deliver nicotine, flavorings, and other substances. To date, multiple epidemiological experimental studies have reported health issues associated with their use, including respiratory toxicity, exacerbation conditions, behavioral physiological effects. While some these effects appear be sex- and/or gender-related, only portion the research has been conducted considering variables. In this review, we sought summarize available literature on sex-specific sex gender differences, predictors risk factors, organ systems, Methods: We searched selected articles from 2018–2023 that included as variable or differences e-cigarette-associated Results: found 115 relevant published since 2018 in outcomes. The main were related reasons for initiation, smoking history, types devices flavoring, polysubstance responses nicotine toxicants e-liquids, lung disease, factors such anxiety, depression, sexuality, bullying. Conclusions: supports notion both influence susceptibility negative e-cigarette use. Future needs consider variables when addressing toxicity health-related consequences.

Background Early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) are pervasive, self-defeating patterns of thoughts and emotions underlying most mental health problems central in schema therapy. However, the characteristics EMSs vary across demographics, despite growing use online communities (OMHCs), how manifest these support-seeking environments remains unclear. Understanding could inform design more effective interventions powered by artificial intelligence to address support seekers’ unique therapeutic needs. Objective We aimed uncover associations between within OMHCs examine features as they reflected OMHCs. Methods curated a dataset 29,329 posts from widely accessed OMHCs, labeling each with relevant problems. To identify associations, we conducted chi-square tests independence calculated odds ratios (ORs) dataset. In addition, developed novel group-level case conceptualization technique, leveraging GPT-4 extract OMHC texts key therapy dimensions, such triggers coping responses. Results Several were identified problems, reflecting contexts. Anxiety-related typically highlighted vulnerability harm or illness (OR 5.64, 95% CI 5.34-5.96; P<.001), while depression-related emphasized unmet interpersonal needs, social isolation 3.18, 3.02-3.34; P<.001). Conversely, eating disorders mostly exemplified negative self-perception emotional inhibition 1.89, 1.45-2.46; Personality themes subjugation 2.51, 1.86-3.39; posttraumatic stress disorder involved distressing experiences mistrust 5.04, 4.49-5.66; Substance failure achieve 1.83, 1.35-2.49; Depression, personality disorders, also associated 12, 9, 7 EMSs, respectively, emphasizing their complexities need for comprehensive interventions. contrast, anxiety, disorder, substance related only 2 3 suggesting that better addressed through targeted EMS extracted our averaged 13.27 (SD 3.05) per schema, 2.65 1.07) dimension, supported existing literature. Conclusions uncovered various among seekers, highlighting prominence specific problem terms EMSs. expressed seekers reinforcing relevance These insights valuable understanding characterized can development intelligence–powered tools enhance on platforms.

Although there is evidence describing how coping strategies can impact mental health outcomes and inequities among young adults, little known about different sub-groups of adults engage with positive the association challenges. Data were drawn from an online cross-sectional survey (July–December 2021) aged 18–30 years who reported experiencing COVID-19-related stress in Canada (n=2288) France (n=1891) during second year pandemic. Latent class analysis was used to identify classes similar strategies. Multinomial logistic regression models performed each country examine differences between these socio-demographic characteristics health. Four identified: high (33%), socially engaged (47.1%), self-care healthy lifestyle (10.1%), low (9.8%). In both countries, men more likely belong rural residents had increased likelihood belonging class. Differences varied by country. Canada, those financial difficulties classes, while, France, descendants immigrants odds Compared class, perceive not well higher rates depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts. Our findings highlight that specific (men, rural, racialized, economically disadvantaged) may be less experience risk These also underscore importance investigating influence contextual factors on adults’ ability adopt
