Introduction Smoking increases the risk of severe illness and mortality from COVID-19. However, impact perception on smoking over time is unknown.Method Participants (n = 487) who reported having smoked daily or nondaily in February 2020 were recruited through Reddit completed a cross-sectional survey. Linear regression models examined that COVID-19 changes cigarettes per day (CPD).Results The greater perceived predicted decreases CPD before pandemic (December 2019 – 2020) to March May 2020, but no change was observed June August 2020. November January 2021. with high levels (>75th percentile) more likely reduce their beginning compared those low (≤25th percentile), increase between 2021, even though remained stable time. Conclusion Perceived associated reduction CPD, participants returned pre-COVID behavior within less than year.

Abstract Introduction This study aimed to estimate time trends in cigarette consumption among smokers England between 2008 and 2023 explore differences by key potential moderators. Aims Methods We used data from 57 778 adult participating a nationally representative monthly cross-sectional survey January September 2023. estimated mean daily of (1) any, (2) manufactured, (3) hand-rolled cigarettes all main type smoked, smoking frequency, age, gender, occupational social grade, region, nicotine replacement therapy use, vaping status. Results Overall fell 13.6 [95% CI = 13.3 13.9] 10.6 [10.5 10.8] per day October 2019 (a 22% decrease), then remained stable up Over this period, the proportion mainly or exclusively increased (from 30.6% [29.1%–32.1%] 52.1% [49.7%–54.5%] 2023). As result, manufactured 47%, 9.5 [9.2–9.8] 5.0 [4.7–5.3] 2023, while 35%, 4.2 [3.9–4.4] 5.6 [5.3–5.9], respectively. The decline overall was observed across subgroups, but greater non-daily smokers, younger those who vaped. Conclusions last 15 years, average number consumed each has fallen almost quarter, plateaued since 2019. There been sharp an increase consumed, as have increasingly shifted towards using tobacco. Implications While over past declining trend stalled (and reversed some population groups) availability cheap, tobacco appears be undermining policies that aim reduce raising price (eg, through taxation) could targeted reignite consumption.

Introduction The use of cigarettes and electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) has likely changed since 2019 with the rise pods disposables, lung injuries outbreak, flavour bans, Tobacco 21 COVID-19 pandemic. Methods Using Population Assessment Health Study, we applied a multistate transition model to 28 061 adults in waves 4–5 (2017–2019) 24 584 5–6 (2019–2021), estimating rates for initiation, cessation switching products each period overall by age group. Results Cigarette initiation among who never used either product decreased from 2017–2019 2019–2021, but ENDS did not significantly change. persistence ENDS-only remained high (75%–80% after 1 year). Cigarette-only transitions similar (88% remaining, 7% non-current 5% dual or use). In contrast, increased 9.5% (95% CI 7.3% 11.7%) 20.0% 17.4% 22.6%) per year, decreasing use. cigarette-only at about 25%. These changes were qualitatively across adult groups, though ages 18–24 years exhibited highest probability Conclusions larger fraction users transitioned compared 2017–2019. Because low, especially older adults, public health implications this change are minimal.
