Chronic pruritus: a narrative review

Chronic
pruritus
encompasses
a
manifestation
of
several
cutaneous,
allergic,
infectious,
neurological,
psychological,
and
systemic
conditions,
whose
etiological
investigation
therapeutic
strategy
can
be
challenging.
This
comprehensive
review
aims
to
enhance
the
understanding
by
highlighting
important
elements
in
its
pathogenesis,
including
keratinocytes,
Merkel
cells
mast
cells,
nerve
fibers,
histaminergic
nonhistaminergic
pathways,
interaction
itch
signals
with
central
nervous
system.
Diagnostic
evaluation
chronic
may
require
meticulous
approach,
guided
identification
skin
lesions
or
signs/symptoms
underlying
diseases.
A
evaluation,
detailed
medical
history,
thorough
physical
examination,
appropriate
laboratory
imaging
tests,
often
supplemented
biopsy
direct
immunofluorescence,
is
essential.
Treatment
strategies
for
should
individualized
based
on
etiology
identified.
General
measures,
such
as
emollients,
serve
initial
interventions,
followed
targeted
approaches.
Topical
corticosteroids,
calcineurin
inhibitors,
phototherapy,
immunosuppressants

cutaneous

Emerging

Pruritus in Lichen Planopilaris and Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia—Clinical Characteristics and Dermoscopic Correlations

Background:
Lichen
planopilaris
(LPP)
and
frontal
fibrosing
alopecia
(FFA)
are
the
most
common
causes
of
lymphocytic
scarring
alopecia.
Itching
scalp
is
a
accompanying
symptom.
The
aim
study
was
clinical
assessment
pruritus
its
correlation
with
dermoscopic
features.
Methods:
Sixty-one
patients
were
analyzed
(LPP
=
16;
FFA
33;
coexisting
LPP-FFA
12).
Each
patient
underwent
trichoscopic
examination.
Itch
severity
characteristics
assessed
using
Visual
Analogue
Scale
(VAS),
4-item
Questionnaire

Results:

73.8%
