The
fall
armyworm
(FAW),
Spodoptera
frugiperda
(J.
E.
Smith),
causes
significant
damage
to
maize,
threatening
the
food
security
and
livelihood
of
millions
smallholder
farmers
in
sub-Saharan
Africa
(SSA).
Crop
diversification
has
been
recommended
as
an
ecologically
sustainable
FAW
control
option.
However,
limited
information
is
available
on
impacts
companion
plants
their
mechanisms
against
SSA,
being
a
relatively
new
pest
region.
Building
upon
our
earlier
laboratory
study,
which
elucidated
how
edible
intercrops
effectively
reduce
infestation,
we
conducted
field
experiments
Kenya
assess
effectiveness
intercropping
maize
with
beans,
groundnut,
cassava
sweet
potato
under
realistic
conditions.
Growing
these
consistently
resulted
fewer
eggs,
larvae
lower
plant
infestation
compared
monoculture
except
cassava.

Wheat
is
considered
to

a

crop

ecosystems

harbor
high

Abstract
Given
environmental,
economic,

social
costs
of
unilateral
chemical
biotechnological
interventions
to
control
pests,
there
is
an
urgent
need
transition
towards
a
knowledge-intensive
holistic
approach
emphasizing
agroecosystem
design
management.
The
focus
will
be
on
what
makes
agroecosystems
susceptible
vulnerable
insect
pathogens
weeds,
in
order
diversified
that
prevent
suppress
pest,

problems.
We
propose
