Abstract Potassium (K) has received less attention than nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P) as a potential yield-limiting factor in cropping systems. Here we investigated the current K limitation intensive cereal systems of Southeast Asia based on nutrient balances, leaf status, long- short-term fertilizer trials, farmer surveys. We found that soil alone cannot meet plant requirements application is insufficient to avoid deficiencies large negative balances fields. Removing requires improved capacity predict response together with long-term, flexible crop straw management strategies. It likely similar limitations have emerged other world regions result decades replenishment potassium, which represent headwinds closing yield gaps existing farmland.

More than 40% of the total oil palm area in Indonesia is owned and managed by smallholders. For large plantations, guidelines are available on so-called ‘best management practices’, which should give superior yields at acceptable costs when followed carefully. We tested a subset such practices sample smallholder aiming to increase profitability. implemented improved (weeding, pruning, harvesting, fertiliser application) 14 plantations 13–15 years after planting Jambi province (Sumatra) West-Kalimantan (Kalimantan) for duration 3 3.5 years. During this period, we recorded yields, measured leaf parameters analysed nutrient contents. Yield recording then continued an additional two In treatment plots, did not significantly, but size bunches leaves increased significantly substantially. The tissue concentrations also although three years, potassium rachis were still below critical value. Because absence yield inputs, net profit implementing better was negative, ‘business as usual’ justified financially. Some practices, harvesting 10-day intervals weeding circles paths, received positively those farmers who could implement them autonomously, applied beyond experiment. It challenging find intensification options that both sustainable profitable, have substantial impact yield, fit smallholders’ realities. On-farm experimentation data collection essential achieving plantations.

Objectives: The study aims to address the disparity in pricing received by smallholder farmers for their palm oil fresh fruit bunches (FFBs). It seeks establish a fair formula that balances interests of and crude (CPO) mills, ensuring sustainability farming practices supporting achievement Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Methods: research models cost structures CPO mills over 30-year investment horizon. Using profitability analyses constraint Internal Rate Return (IRR) is greater than or equal IRR derives formula. proposed calculates price FFBs (PFFB) as function (PCPO) extraction yield (OER), supported statistical simulations. Results: presents equation, PFFB = -2438.7971 + 0.1784 PCPO 10219.2072 OER, which transparent based on significant parameters. provides practical approach determining FFBs, equitable profit distribution between mills. This eliminates need prolonged negotiations while fostering financial stability farmers. Conclusion: offers straightforward method FFB prices, aligning supports industry's objectives contributes achieving SDGs empowering promoting trade practices.
