Abstract Smallholder farmers produce most of the food in Uganda, yet they are some world’s insecure. To better understand heterogeneity among smallholders and promote contextualized sustainable development policies that address insecurity, this study created farming typologies for 150 households southcentral Uganda. The cross-sectional survey was administered Masaka District collected data on farm (production) farmer (socio-economic) characteristics. By combining Factor Analysis Mixed Data (FAMD) Hierarchical Clustering Principal Components (HCPC), we developed three distinct typologies. Half Typology 1 grew coffee; all 2 bananas; 3 specialized banana-coffee production. bananas experienced less fluctuations seasonal security than those did not, identified as resilient to insecurity. greatest differences between were how land acquired (Typology 2 vs. 3), walking time 3) inorganic fertilizer use coffee 3). We concluded Uganda decide a cropping system based their rights (i.e. acquired) resource endowment, specifically availability labor capital. Dedicating even small proportion perennials adopting active field management associated with reduced Agricultural should therefore be geared towards addressing these issues.

Abstract Soil is central to the complex interplay among biodiversity, climate, and society. This paper examines interconnectedness of soil climate change, societal impacts, emphasizing urgent need for integrated solutions. Human‐induced biodiversity loss change intensify environmental degradation, threatening human well‐being. Soils, rich in vital ecosystem function regulation, are highly vulnerable these pressures, affecting nutrient cycling, fertility, resilience. also crucially regulates influencing energy, water cycles, carbon storage. Yet, poses significant challenges health dynamics, amplifying global warming. Integrated approaches essential, including sustainable land management, policy interventions, technological innovations, engagement. Practices like agroforestry organic farming improve mitigate impacts. Effective policies governance crucial promoting practices conservation. Recent technologies aid monitoring implementing management. Societal engagement, through education collective action, stewardship. By prioritizing interdisciplinary research addressing key frontiers, scientists can advance understanding biodiversity–climate change–society nexus, informing strategies sustainability social equity.

Abstract In Europe, uptake of multi-peril crop insurance remains limited, leading to discussions on premium subsidies. A study 228 Saxony farmers investigated their attitudes and willingness pay for a in 2022. Using cluster analysis based farmers’ satisfaction with current risk management as well market supply tools, perceived benefits the insurance, views governmental intervention, four farmer segments were identified. Each showed varied toward subsidies, pay, farm characteristics. As an initial ex-ante this topic, insights are invaluable providers policy makers.

Abstract Agriculture is central to sustainable development both from provisioning and pressure perspectives. It hence imperative measure its diverse outcomes, for which various global indicator systems have been developed. Yet, these come with trade‐offs, example, between comparability among countries versus specificity national context. This poses the question how relevant generic indicators are stakeholders specific information requirements can be integrated within a globally comparable assessment. Herein, we present co‐evaluation of an existing system agricultural sustainability practice, research education, public administration, private sector, NGOs in Austria, representing expert community. Focusing on relevance complementary metrics, found that particularly social themes related were highly context, followed by economic environmental aspects. Co‐interpretation selected trajectories showed drivers interactions complex may change over time, emphasizing also importance contextual information. availability data proposed remains key limitation adaptation system. We outline two options improving system: (a) substituting less or (b) introducing second tier covering regionally important To explore most appropriate across geographies whether unified approaches such regionalization indeed feasible, propose include co‐creation regionalized frameworks future iterations agriculturally countries.

Abstract Conservation Agriculture (CA) is actively promoted as an alternative farming system that combines environmental, economic, and social sustainability. Three pillars define CA: (i) minimum mechanical soil disturbance, (ii) permanent organic cover, (iii) species diversification. The local context, constraints, needs of the farmers influence translation into practices. Currently, there no method for categorizing this diversity CA practices, which hampers impact assessment, understanding farmer choices pathways, stakeholder communication, policymaking. This paper presents a systematic to identify categorize practices at regional level, anchored in three based on implemented by farmers. classification grounded intersection archetypal analysis hierarchical clustering analysis. was used study Wallonia, Belgium, survey sample 48 Combining two methods increases proportion classified while allowing distinction between CA-types with extreme salient intermediate comprising whose fall these references. reveals explanatory factors implementation Wallonia: tillage-intensive crops temporary grasslands crop sequence, certification. Agricultural systems tend to be characterised by large diversity, therefore, solving socio-economic and environmental problems in agriculture requires targeted contextualised policies. Abstract The adoption of agri-environment practices (AEPs) is crucial for safeguarding the long-term sustainability ecosystem services within European agricultural landscapes. However, tailoring policies to unique characteristics farming systems a challenging task, often neglecting local farm parameters or requiring extensive survey data. Here, we develop simplified typology system archetypes (FSAs), using field-level data on farms’ economic size and specialisation derived from Integrated Administration Control System in three case studies Germany, Czechia United Kingdom. Our identifies groups farms that are assumed react similarly policy measures, bridging gap between efforts understand individual behaviour broad agri-environmental typologies. We assess usefulness our approach by quantifying spatial association identified with ecologically relevant AEPs (cover crops, fallow, organic farming, grassland maintenance, vegetation buffers, conversion cropland forest) rates AEP different types farms. results show 20 archetypes, economically large specialised general cropping dominate land all studies, covering 56% 85% total area. Despite regional differences, found consistent trends across diverse contexts. Economically those specialising grazing livestock were more likely adopt AEPs, larger demonstrating proclivity wider range measures. In contrast, smaller usually focused narrower spectrum and, together an value <2 000 EUR, accounted 70% no uptake. These insights indicate potential FSA as framework infer key patterns adoption, thus providing information policy-makers direct identification target ultimately developing tailored policies.
