In the context of water scarcity, understanding mechanisms influencing and altering agricultural consumption can offer valuable insights into scientific management limited resources. Using Henan Province as a case study, this research applies Mann–Kendall test method, spatial Markov transfer chain model, optimal parameter geo-detector Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) decomposition method to investigate evolution characteristics in its key factors. The findings revealed following: (1) Agricultural has shown significant decline from 1999 2022. (2) According observations, stability exceeds spillover effect, cross-border grade is challenging. Moreover, phenomenon influenced by neighboring regions. (3) factors added value are sown area food crops, total area, irrigated average annual air temperature. (4) Among effects on consumption, contribution each effect changes role distribution exhibit notable differences. Overall, these provide theoretical references for efficient use resources sustainable development region.
