Abstract Produced water (PW) from oil and gas exploration has adverse effects on aquatic life living organisms that need to be treated before discharge. However, proper treatment is essential meet the permissible limits. In study, PW was first pre-treated with activated sludge. The then utilized as a feed for Scenedesmus obliquus microalgae in 13 L photobioreactor. Initially, 10% of introduced 90% culture, after exponential growth, an additional 25% added without any nutrients. This study demonstrated impact semi-continuous growth well removal pollutants including total organic carbon (TOC) heavy metals. Moreover, salinity, electrical conductivity (EC), pH, dissolved solids (TDS) PW-microalgae culture were assessed. efficiency TOC, TDS EC 64, 49.8, 49.1% respectively. Furthermore, S. effectively removed barium, iron, manganese metals 95, 76, 52% been found able grow mixotrophic environment it reduced TOC PW.

Abstract Produced water (PW) from oil and gas exploration adversely affects aquatic life living organisms, necessitating treatment before discharge to meet effluent permissible limits. This study first used activated sludge pretreat PW in a sequential batch reactor (SBR). The pretreated then entered 13 L photobioreactor (PBR) containing Scenedesmus obliquus microalgae culture. Initially, 10% of the mixed with 90% culture PBR. After exponential growth microalgae, an additional 25% was added PBR without extra nutrients. reported performance as well reduction effluent’s total organic carbon (TOC), dissolved solids (TDS), electrical conductivity (EC), heavy metals content. results demonstrated removal efficiencies 64% for TOC, 49.8% TDS, 49.1% EC. also showed reductions barium, iron, manganese by 95, 76, 52%, respectively.
