Environmental DNA (eDNA) preserved in marine sediments is increasingly being used to study past ecosystems. However, little known about how accurately biodiversity recorded sediment eDNA archives, especially planktonic taxa. Here, we address this question by comparing eukaryotic diversity 273 samples from three water depths and the surface of 24 stations Nordic Seas. Analysis 18S-V9 metabarcoding data reveals distinct assemblages between eDNA. Only 40% Amplicon Sequence Variants (ASVs) detected were also found Remarkably, ASVs shared accounted for 80% total sequence reads suggesting that a large amount plankton transported seafloor, predominantly abundant phytoplankton not all taxa equally archived on seafloor. The deposited was dominated diatoms showed an underrepresentation certain nano- picoplankton (Picozoa or Prymnesiophyceae). Our offers first insights into patterns relation seasonality spatial variability environmental conditions results suggest genetic composition structure community vary considerably throughout column differ what accumulates sediment. Hence, interpretation sedimentary archives should take account potential taxonomic abundance biases when reconstructing changes biodiversity.

AbstractDiatoms have unique silica cellular and metabolic characteristics can grow in various environments, including wastewater, facilitating pollutant removal. Diatoms provide a sustainable solution to municipal wastewater treatment, particularly the tertiary quaternary stages, contributing carbon neutrality. Diatom-based materials (such as diatom biomass) wide applications be processed into value-added bioproducts such lipids, polysaccharides, pigments. Despite their potentials, of diatoms treatment are limited. Existing reviews fail address how growth kinetics affects treatment. Here, we for first time summarize propose promising species Given scarcity on performance also discuss efficacy removing contaminants from wastewater. Moreover, elucidate removal mechanisms nutrients, heavy metals, emerging by that missing existing reviews. Considering complexity emphasize selecting with high rates, tolerance contaminants, efficient nutrient removal/uptake, COD removal, bioproduct yields. This will ensure both effective economic viability. Abstract Background Nitzschia closterium f. minutissima is a commonly available diatom that plays important roles in marine aquaculture. It was originally classified as (Bacillariaceae, Bacillariophyta) but currently regarded heterotypic synonym of Phaeodactylum tricornutum . The aim this study to obtain the draft genome microalga N. understand its phylogenetic placement and evolutionary specialization. Given ornate hierarchical silicified cell walls (frustules) diatoms have immense applications nanotechnology for biomedical fields, biosensors optoelectric devices, transcriptomic data were generated by using reference genome-based read mapping identify significantly differentially expressed genes elucidate molecular processes involved biosilicification. Results In study, we 13.81 Gb pass reads from PromethION sequencer. has total length 29.28 Mb, contains 28 contigs with an N50 value 1.23 Mb. GC content 48.55%, approximately 18.36% assembly contained repeat sequences. Gene annotation revealed 9,132 protein-coding genes. results comparative genomic analysis showed clustered sister lineage divergence time between them estimated be 17.2 million years ago (Mya). CAFF demonstrated 220 gene families changed unique 154 specific P. , moreover, only 26 overlapped these two species. A 818 DEGs response silicon identified through RNA sequencing, are various such transcription regulator activity. Several encoding proteins, including transporters, heat shock factors, methyltransferases, ankyrin domains, cGMP-mediated signaling pathways-related cytoskeleton-associated polyamines, glycoproteins saturated fatty acids may contribute formation frustules minutissima. Conclusions Here, described compared it those eight other diatoms, which provided new insight into features. Transcriptome will help underlying mechanism biosilicification
