Adult male mice produce high rates of ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) during courtship interactions with females. It was long thought that only males produced USVs, but recent studies using microphone arrays to assign USVs individual signalers report females a portion (5–18%) total USVs. The factors regulate female USV production are poorly understood. Here, we tested the idea is regulated by estrous state. To facilitate detection paired were muted for via caspase-mediated ablation midbrain neurons required production. We recorded between group-housed B6 and low not modulated Similar results obtained single-housed outbred wild-derived males. These findings suggest either substantial when interacting vocal partners or prior have overestimated Studies employing methods can unambiguously signalers, regardless inter-mouse distances, needed distinguish these possibilities.
