Microplastic (MP) pollution is a major environmental concern for mountain ecosystem and high-mountain lakes in particular, which are recognized indicators of global change. In this study, the presence MPs was assessed abiotic (water sediment) biotic (zooplankton, tadpoles, fish) compartments two (Upper Lake Balma Lower Balma) Cottian Alps (northwest Italy). No were found water zooplankton samples, whereas mean sediment samples 1.33 ± 0.67 items/m3 1.75 0.62 Upper Balma, respectively. The tadpoles Rana temporaria 0.33 0.58 items/individual 0.66 number items gastrointestinal tract (GIT) fish (Salvelinus fontinalis) considerably higher specimens from (0.45 items/g GIT) than those (0.20 GIT). There negative relationship between size (weight age) abundance GIT fish, indicating that young accumulated more MP probably due to high prey ingestion rate compared adults. same color (blue, white, black), shape (fibers fragments), chemical type (polypropylene polyethylene) both lakes. Our findings suggest use S. fontinalis as an indicator Further studies needed better understand sources effects these remote ecosystems.

The high-mountain lakes of the Alps, perched like glistening gems in cradle Europe's most formidable mountain range, have for generations epitomized nature's majesty. These remote and pristine bodies water served as invaluable sentinels global change, repositories geological history, sources freshwater surrounding regions. Yet, despite their seemingly imperturbable beauty seclusion, these are not immune to evolving forces our changing world. Re-emerging threats, exacerbated by relentless march climate change intensified human activities, cast a shadow over future, posing profound challenges that demand attention. aim this perspective is shed light on main emerging raise awareness, advocate proactive actions aimed at preserving protecting lakes. threats include retreat glaciers, UV radiation, long-range transport contaminants, impact alien species usage Alpine storage power stations. Additionally, increased tourism recreational activities environments can cause habitat disturbance, further endangering unique ecosystems. present article also offers valuable perspectives necessity monitoring research efforts Such crucial comprehending ecological well-being ecosystems, evaluating consequences environmental shifts, devising successful conservation strategies.

Mountain lakes are increasingly affected by global change pressures. While there is growing evidence of impacts on ecosystem functioning, few studies considered changes in services (ES). This study aimed (1) to examine the exposure small and natural mountain European Alps pressures (2) estimate potential six relevant ES considering future climate projections water use. For 2455 lakes, we mapped level pressures, including change, atmospheric nutrient deposition, anthropogenic activities (e.g., use). Our results indicate that more than half Alpine feature a considerable change. Hotspot analysis revealed spatial clusters with above-average (23.7% all lakes), mostly located central part Alps, while below-average prevailed south-western (19.3%) eastern parts (10.6%). 15 case quantified key ES. The revealed, particular, negative effects maintaining habitat populations as well aesthetic value, but contrastingly, also some positive for outdoor recreation, research education. findings suggest need comprehensive integration into current management policy frameworks ensure ecological integrity provision lakes. Interdisciplinary lake will be important overcome uncertainties related coupling limnological parameters indicators.

Multiple initiatives have been undertaken, from establishing rules policies implementing them assessing effects, leading lessons being learned for better management. This article presents study on Indonesia recommends alternative improvements toward A combination descriptive qualitative analysis authors’ experience research activities critical used examine existing formulate recommendations sustainable Most watersheds susceptible degradation due numerous threats. The challenges management, including land climate-induced lack synchronization coordination, limited resources, anthropogenic factors, led decreased health productivity hindered effective Integrated especially at micro-watershed level, addresses these challenges. Global climate change can significantly affect lake systems. However, our understanding of extreme events in water levels on a global scale remains relatively limited. In this study, we conducted quantitative analysis level 245 lakes worldwide over the past three decades utilising altimetry satellite-derived records. These are broadly categorised as reservoir, endorheic, or permafrost-fed lakes. Moreover, assessed spatiotemporal differences among different types. We then preliminary relationship between and meteorological variables, well large-scale oscillations, to understand driving forces behind their occurrence. Our findings revealed that two under definition employed proportion experiencing annually exhibited cyclic fluctuation approximately ten years, rather than anticipated increase. distribution water-level varied types Extreme were closely related evaporation temperature. The implications study potentially profound, include forecasting ecology, ramifications change, facilitating sustainable resource management.

In view of the increasing demand for ecosystem services (ESs) and rising pressures from global change on mountain lakes, sustainable management strategies are increasingly needed. However, integrative assessments ESs provided by small lakes lacking. This study adopted an ES valuation perspective, applying multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) to four exemplary in South Tyrol, Italy. With involvement stakeholders, we identified five particular importance: provision habitat, aesthetics, surface water, recreation, representation. These were weighted with respect their perceived importance quantified based multi-metric indicators integrating biophysical socio-cultural/economic aspects. The current was then evaluated PROMETHEE II. We showed that quantity varied distinct socio-ecological characteristics. Well accessible larger currently provide amounts high demand, such as habitat provision, but remarkably, smaller remote also notable aesthetics. Our approach provides insights support considering future challenges potentially applicable other regional contexts.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a critical technology for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions combating climate change. CCS involves capturing CO2 from industrial processes power plants injecting them deep underground long-term storage. The success of projects influenced by various factors, including the regional pressure dissipation effects in subsurface geological formations. safe efficient operation depends on maintaining formation. Regional dissipation, often resulting permeability geomechanical properties site, can have significant project integrity. This paper provides state-of-art impact projects, highlights its effects, discusses ongoing investigations this area based different case studies. results corroborate idea that Sleipner has considerable lateral hydraulic connectivity, which evidenced increase ranging <0.1 MPa an uncompartmentalized reservoir to >1 substantial flow barriers.
