This paper describes a new approach for understanding urban mobility called geospatial and temporal (GeoST) mapping, which translates telematics (location) data into travel characteristics. The provides the speed-acceleration profile of transport flow at high spatial resolution. profiles can be converted to vehicle-specific power (VSP), used estimate vehicle emissions. underlying in model is retrieved from large dataset, was collected GPS-connected vehicles during their journeys over UK's West Midlands region road network years 2016 2018. Single journey were geospatially aggregated then distributed GeoST-segments. In total, approximately 354,000 GeoST-segments, covering 17,700 km roads 35 timeslots are parameterized. GeoST mapping average speed (traffic flow), VSP different types analysed. role slope upon estimated every GeoST-segment through knowledge elevation start end points segments. Previously, its effect have been typically ignored planning studies. A series case studies presented that highlight differing scales. For example, results show total fleet moved faster by an 3% compared studied weekends shown less safe, weekdays, because lower adherence limits. By including calculations, annually averaged differ +12.6%, +14.3%, + 12.7% motorways, primary roads, secondary respectively, when calculations ignore slope.

This paper discusses the impact of rapid economic development on air quality in Emirate Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). Dubai is one fastest-growing cities world, with a population increase approximately 80 × over last 60 years. The concentrations five criteria pollutants (CAPs) including carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), particulate matter smaller than 10 μm (PM10), ozone (O3) and sulphur (SO2) were studied from 2013 to 2021 at 14 regulatory monitoring stations. Results show that biggest improvements pollution are for primary NO2 SO2, reductions 54% 93% respectively period studied. Gross domestic product (GDP), growth energy consumption significantly negatively correlated SO2 strongly positively PM10. CO number buildings completed, while results O3 inconclusive. Trends PM10, indicate these two decoupled development, supporting, caution, environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis relationship between degradation. improvement city's due effective implementation local policies, unaffected by large-scale urbanization. monthly assessments Dubai's 2019 2020 3–16% COVID-related levels pollutants, except ozone, which increased an average 8%.

The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by SARS-CoV-2, disrupted work and life patterns worldwide, underscoring the urgency of addressing climate change. Despite contributing minimally to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, Africa faces disproportionate vulnerability impacts This commentary explores benefits blended models (remote in-office work) readiness African cities adopt them. Notably, shift working from home (WFH) during pandemic improved individual well-being reduced office energy consumption commuting-related emissions. Robust digital infrastructure organizational sustainable policies are essential fully leverage for urban sustainability. unexpected opportunities that arose could help address change through careful planning investment.

Keeping track of air quality is paramount to issue preemptive measures mitigate adversarial effects on the population. This study introduces a new quantum–classical approach, combining graph-based deep learning structure with quantum neural network predict ozone concentration up 6 h ahead. The proposed architecture utilized historical data from Houston, Texas, major urban area that frequently fails comply regulations. Our results revealed smoother transition between classical framework and its counterpart enhances model’s results. Moreover, we observed min–max normalization increased ansatz repetitions also improved hybrid performance. was evident evaluating assessment metrics root mean square error (RMSE), coefficient determination (R2) forecast skill (FS). Values for R2 FS horizons considered were 94.12% 31.01% 1 h, 83.94% 48.01% 3 75.62% 57.46% forecasts. A comparison existing literature both QML models methodology could provide competitive results, even surpass some well-established forecasting models, proving be valuable resource forecasting, thus validating this approach.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) represent a growing health burden in sub-Saharan Africa, especially Uganda. The COVID-19 pandemic presented significant challenges for the Ugandan healthcare system, though changes hospital admissions and outcomes adults with NCDs without infection remain unknown. We evaluated trends of NCD-related in-hospital mortality among patients large regional referral Uganda from March 2019 through August 2021. Between 1, 2019, 31, 2021, we conducted chart review who carried history or were admitted an NCD to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital. Based on trends, broke into three periods: Pre-Pandemic (March May 2020), Early Pandemic (June 2020, 2021), Late (April calculated admission rates most common diagnoses. A multivariable logistic regression model was fitted primary outcome mortality. Of 3777 total individuals, 1655 Pre-Pandemic, 1423 Pandemic, 699 Pandemic. found five-fold increase period compared periods (15.4 vs 2.9 2.4, p < 0.001). Factors associated increased odds included during (odds ratio [OR] 5.59; 95% CI 3.90, 8.02; 0.001), hypotension (OR 2.13; 1.40, 3.24; diagnosis malignancy 1.79; 1.06, 3.01; = 0.028) stroke 1.75; 2.88; 0.028), each unit SOFA score 1.41; 1.30, 1.52; Length stay greater than 7 days decreased 0.56; 95%CI 0.40, 0.79; NCD-associated high early period. Disruptions longitudinal care that occurred due may have been contributory, this requires further investigation. Future work should focus hospitalized individuals resource limited settings developing more resilient systems care.

In pursuit of innovation-driven green development, effectively leveraging innovation policies for environmental betterment has emerged as a pivotal challenge in China's sustainable development trajectory. Investigating 287 Chinese cities from 2010 to 2020, this study adopts the pilot initiative National Innovation Demonstration Zones (NIDZs), cornerstone regional strategy, quasi-natural experimental setup. Utilizing double machine learning method, we probe into implications implementation policy on urban air quality, its underlying mechanisms, and heterogeneity outcomes. The empirical evidence underscores that significantly bolster result persists endogenous controls rigorous robustness checks. Mechanistically, setting up Zone can curb deterioration quality by reducing total energy consumption whole society, including reduction electricity consumption, use manufactured gas natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas. Regionally, Southeast demonstrates enhanced efficacy mitigating degradation PM2.5 concentration, whereas Northwest sees pronounced reductions carbon dioxide emissions following policy.
