Abstract Laves phases with their comparably simple crystal structure are very common intermetallic and can be formed from element combinations all over the periodic table resulting in a huge number of known examples. Even though this type is for almost 100 years, although lot information on stability, structure, properties has accumulated especially during last about 20 systematic evaluation rationalization particular as function involved elements often lacking. It one two main goals review to summarize knowledge some selected respective topics certain focus non-stoichiometric, i.e., non-ideal phases. The second, central goal give overview role kinds materials functional structural applications. There surprisingly broad range successful utilization applications comprising hydrogen storage material (Hydraloy), magneto-mechanical sensors actuators (Terfenol), or wear- corrosion-resistant coatings corrosive atmospheres at high temperatures (Tribaloy), name but few. Regarding applications, there renewed interest using creep-strengthening high-temperature steels new alloy design concepts were developed successfully tested. Apart steels, also occur various other sometimes effectively improving properties, acting detrimental way.
