Abstract Asphalt pavements are constantly exposed to many destructive environmental factors including de-icing salts. The problem of the negative effect salt ions on performance and consequently durability road occurs mainly in temperate climates regions directly neighboring saline water areas. react chemically with bitumen components, which changes their electronic structure results a weakening intermolecular interactions occurring between them. Therefore, this study focused primarily an investigation into potential for inhibiting erosion process by its modification chitosan. Studies involving acidity eroding solution as well chemical surface properties eroded were carried out three different salts (NaCl, MgCl 2 , CaCl ) at varying concentrations, i.e. 5%, 10%, 15% (w/w) after 7 28 days process. Main findings demonstrate that chitosan prevents physico-chemical during This is especially visible . For these salts, biopolymer reduces introduction Cl − bitumen-building hydrocarbon structures formation C–Cl bonds, demonstrated reduction pH solutions. In addition, inhibits leaching organic matter from bitumen, C = O groups effects cohesion energy bitumen.
