ABSTRACT Ornamental aquaculture and fishkeeping are very popular with millions of enthusiasts worldwide. The number newly imported fish species for ornamental purposes grew slowly from World War I until the 1980s. It then exponentially increased now more than 7900 a large scientifically undescribed morphotypes. Here we present first comprehensive review freshwater brackish importations during boom keeping at turn Millennium discuss this cultural socio‐economic lens in European context. increase imports accelerated following availability air transport end Cold War. From list traded species, largest was found groups: armored loricariid catfish (family Loricariidae), cory Callichthyidae, subfamily Callichthyinae), cichlids African Great Lakes (order Cichliformes), killifish (egg‐laying order Cyprinodontiformes), characids Characiformes). These taxa represent ca. 74% all fresh water species. ability to absorb atmospheric oxygen (e.g., Belontidae, including gouramis bettas) have dominated market, but their ratio other has declined modern era (after WWI). By identifying most aquarium through history trade, our findings aim guide present‐day management better inform invasion risk assessments.

Wild-caught fish from coral reefs, one of the most threatened ecosystems on planet, continue to supply marine aquarium trade. Despite customs and veterinary checks during imports, comprehensive data this global industry remain scarce. This study provides consolidated largest import market by value, European Union (EU): a 24-million-euro annual trade detailing main exporting importing countries, as well species families 26 million specimens imported between 2014 2021. A watchlist alert system based number traded, trends, vulnerability index according FishBase IUCN Red List conservation status is presented, providing key information which should require closer scrutiny authorities. While TRAde Control Expert System (TRACES) electronically monitors movement live animals respond quickly biosecurity risks, one-third ornamental lack species-level information. With minor adjustments, TRACES holds potential significantly enhance granularity monitoring wildlife trade, with being an interesting case validate approach.

Tropical fishkeeping is a popular practice in societies across the globe and involves recreating sustaining an entire ecosystem aquarium within domestic setting. The process invariably has environmental impact, yet assessment of this impact previously been limited to ecological consequences harvesting fish from wild or release non-native species. Provided here are first estimates carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2 eq) emissions produced running tropical multiple countries Northern Europe (France, Poland UK), along with water consumption. Estimates were silico discussed context freshwater marine aquariums, calculated using example sizes 50, 200 400 l. Using UK, depending on size conditions, produces estimated 85.3-635.2 kg CO2 eq per year, equating 1.6%-12.4% UK annual average household emissions, uses 156-31,200 l 0.2%-30.1% usage. Despite this, comparison average-size dog (127-1592 year) cat (121-251 year), meat consumption alone, demonstrates that ornamental can be more environmentally conscious pet choice. In addition, majority generated energy equipment as national electricity grids begin decarbonize, estimate should decrease.
