Antibiotic pollution in natural water bodies has reached alarming levels, posing a significant threat to the delicate balance of aquatic ecosystems. Bacteria and phytoplankton are foundational components these ecosystems, playing crucial roles as decomposers primary producers, respectively, their symbiotic relationships essential for maintaining ecological stability. Despite accumulating research focusing on direct toxic effects antibiotics, disruptions complex bacteria–phytoplankton symbioses remain largely underexplored. In this review, we first introduce mechanisms between bacteria phytoplankton, highlighting processes underlying formation relationships. We then examine antibiotic sensitivity heightened vulnerability bacteria. Finally, explore mechanism by which antibiotics disrupt bacteria, leading altered interactions with phytoplankton. These cause shifts population community structure dynamics implications ecosystem functions, including higher risk exacerbation harmful algal blooms. Our study reveals that even if environmental concentrations do not directly impact populations, they can affect populations communities altering Understanding is thus unraveling impacts antibiotics. This underexplored field demands greater attention from ecology researchers, it key defining thresholds pollutants.
