Algae are an entry point for mercury (Hg) into the food web. Bioconcentration of Hg by algae is crucial its biogeochemical cycling and environmental risk. Herein, considering cell heterogeneity, we investigated bioconcentration coexisting isotope-labeled inorganic (199IHg) methyl (201MeHg) six typical freshwater marine using dual-mass single-cell inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (scICP-MS). First, a universal pretreatment procedure scICP-MS analysis was developed. Using proposed method, intra- interspecies heterogeneities kinetics were revealed at level. The heterogeneity in cellular contents largely related to size. process reached dynamic equilibrium involving influx/adsorption efflux/desorption within hours. Algal density key factor affecting distribution between ambient water. Cellular negatively correlated with algal density, whereas volume concentration factors almost remained constant. Accordingly, developed model based on that well describes density-driven effects algae. From novel perspective, findings improve our understanding governed various biological factors.
