Abstract Alzheimer’s disease (AD) poses a significant public health problem, affecting millions of people across the world. Despite decades research into therapeutic strategies for AD, effective prevention or treatment this devastating disorder remains elusive. In review, we discuss potential photobiomodulation (PBM) preventing and alleviating AD-associated pathologies, with focus on biological mechanisms underlying therapy. Future directions guidance clinical practice non-invasive non-pharmacological therapy are also highlighted. The available evidence indicates that different paradigms, including transcranial systemic PBM, along recently proposed remote all could be promising AD. PBM exerts diverse effects, such as enhancing mitochondrial function, mitigating neuroinflammation caused by activated glial cells, increasing cerebral perfusion, improving glymphatic drainage, regulating gut microbiome, boosting myokine production, modulating immune system. We suggest may serve powerful intervention

Abstract Preclinical and clinical studies have indicated that combining photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy with other therapeutic approaches may influence the treatment process in a variety of disorders. The purpose this systematic review was to determine whether PBM-combined provides additional benefits over monotherapies neurologic neuropsychiatric In addition, describes most commonly used methods PBM parameters these conjunctional approaches. To accomplish this, search conducted Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus databases through January 2024. 95 potentially eligible articles on strategies for neurological neuropsychological disorders were identified, including 29 preclinical 66 trials. According findings, seven major categories identified based disease type: diseases, neurodegenerative ischemia, nerve injury, pain, paresis, neuropathy. These looked at effects laser combination therapies like pharmacotherapies, physical therapies, exercises, stem cells, experimental materials both animal models humans. findings suggested could produce synergistic effects, leading better outcomes treating psychiatric relieving symptoms. indicate be useful adjunct conventional treatments psychological

Cerebral infra-slow oscillation (ISO) is a source of vasomotion in endogenic (E; 0.005-0.02 Hz), neurogenic (N; 0.02-0.04 and myogenic (M; 0.04-0.2 Hz) frequency bands. In this study, we quantified changes prefrontal concentrations oxygenated hemoglobin (Δ[HbO]) redox-state cytochrome c oxidase (Δ[CCO]) as hemodynamic metabolic activity metrics, electroencephalogram (EEG) powers electrophysiological activity, using concurrent measurements 2-channel broadband near-infrared spectroscopy EEG on the forehead 22 healthy participants at rest. After preprocessing, multi-modality signals were analyzed generalized partial directed coherence to construct unilateral neurophysiological networks among three metrics (with simplified symbols HbO, CCO, EEG) each E/N/M band. The links these represent neurovascular, neurometabolic, metabolicvascular coupling (NVC, NMC, MVC). results illustrate that demand for oxygen by neuronal metabolism (EEG CCO) drives supply (HbO) all bands resting cortex. Furthermore, investigate effect transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM), performed sham-controlled study delivering an 800-nm laser beam left right cortex same participants. performing data processing statistical analysis, obtained novel important findings: tPBM delivered either side triggered alteration or reversal network couplings entities (i.e., frequency-specific powers) physiological E N bands, demonstrating during post-tPBM period, both drive (PFC). Overall, revealed facilitates significant modulation directionality electrophysiological, metabolic, activities.

Introduction This study investigated the effects of transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM) on improving frontal lobe cognitive functions and mental health older adults. Methods Three adults with mild impairment (MCI) non-amnestic type received 18-session tPBM stimulation for 9 weeks were assessed neuropsychological tests memory executive standardized questionnaires depressive anxiety symptoms, global functions, daily functioning abilities before after stimulation. Results At baseline, their intrusion and/or perseveration errors in a verbal test fluency test, as measures borderline to severely impaired range at baseline. After stimulation, three showed various levels improvement functions. One adult’s improved from <1st–2nd percentile (moderately range) 41st–69th (average range), another 11th 83rd percentile, third 5th 56th percentile. Moreover, improvements symptoms also observed. severe baseline intervention. The other two adults’ normal Discussion These findings provide preliminary support potential improve MCI. Given small sample size only absence placebo control group, larger randomized controlled studies are needed confirm its potential.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common cause of neurologic morbidity for which few effective therapies exist, especially during the chronic stage. A potential therapy TBI transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM). tPBM noninvasive neuromodulation technique that uses light to stimulate cortex and increase blood flow metabolism while also enhancing cognition improving affect. There has been much work focusing on efficacy in acute small animals, but less focused TBI. Patients with manifest microvascular injury, may serve as modifiable treatment target tPBM. need study improve tPBM, currently implemented protocols targeting have relatively unsuccessful. This review includes 16 studies, concluded after application, there were improvements neuropsychological outcomes addition increases cerebral flow. However, these conclusions are confounded by differing parameters, sample sizes, heterogenous populations. While results encouraging, further understand therapeutic

Introduction The relative oxygenated hemoglobin (HbO) measured using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has been considered as an index for cognitive loading, with the more difficult task, higher level. A previous study reported that young adults who received transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM) showed a reduced HbO of suggesting tPBM may enhance efficiency. present further investigated effect on efficiency in older adults. Methods Thirty participants single forehead 350 s. Before and after tPBM, their visual span task various difficulties was fNIRS. Results After exhibited significantly lower harder (span 7) but not easier level 2) behavioral performance remained unchanged. In addition, factors affecting reduction were examined, results individuals better memory (as by 30-min delayed recall test) HbO. Discussion suggest efficiency, tend to benefit more.

Abstract Memory decline has been observed in the aging population and is a risk factor for later development of dementia. Understanding how memory preserved older adults an important topic. The present study examines hemodynamic features whose comparable with that young adults. In study, 45 younger performed visual task various difficulty levels (i.e., items to be remembered), their cerebral hemodynamics at each level were measured by functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). results showed exhibited higher activation than under more difficult but not easier levels. addition, performance being able remember six items) right-lateralized activation. However, those unable do so left-lateralized suggested high-performing possess successful compensatory mechanisms recruiting cognitive resources specialized brain region.
