Sterol and lipid metabolism in bees

Abstract
Background
Bees
provide
essential
pollination
services
for
many
food
crops
and
are
critical
in
supporting
wild
plant
diversity.
However,
the
dietary
landscape
of
pollen
sources
social
solitary
bees
has
changed
because
agricultural
intensification
habitat
loss.
For
this
reason,
understanding
basic
nutrient
metabolism
meeting
nutritional
needs
is
becoming
an
urgent
requirement
agriculture
conservation.
We
know
that
principal
source
fat
sterols
pollinators,
but
a
precise
what
nutrients
how
much
needed
not
yet
clear.
Sterols
key
producing
hormones
control
development
may
be
present
cell
membranes,
where
fatty-acid-containing
species
important
structural
signalling
molecules
(phospholipids)
or
to
supply,
store
distribute
energy
(glycerides).
Aim
review
In
review,
we
examine
current
general
sterol
lipid
from
variety
literature
discuss
implications
bee
health.
Key
scientific
