Gamma oscillations in brain activity (30–150 Hz) have been studied for over 80 years. Although the past three decades significant progress has made to try understand their functional role, a definitive answer regarding causal implication perception, cognition, and behavior still lies ahead of us. Here, we first review basic neural mechanisms that give rise gamma then focus on two main pillars exploration. The pillar examines major theories role information processing brain, also highlighting critical viewpoints. second reviews novel research direction proposes therapeutic oscillations, namely entrainment using sensory stimulation (GENUS). We extensively discuss both positive findings issues reproducibility GENUS.
