Abstract Source–sink dynamics investigates species dispersal, mainly at the landscape scale, providing outcomes for conservation problem-solving. Designing plans requires accurately identifying a source or sink habitat within landscape. However, this practical use demands theoretical background and clear definition of its successful implementation. This study application terms sink, examining how biological features affect their use, if they have been consistently applied in published studies. We conducted systematic review focused on source–sink performed descriptive textual analysis to understand application. Most research did not expressly state what was, leaving knowledge gap that prevents complete understanding The concept has different uses is better detailed than term sink. concepts was taxon-dependent; animal requirements are needed indicate population/habitat can play role as Because these were being used differently, terminology hinders fundamental theory, evolutionary perspectives, applicability conservation, especially tropics, where significant information found.

Knowledge of the potential distribution and locations poorly known threatened species is crucial for guiding conservation strategies new field surveys. The painted tree-rat ( Callistomys pictus ) a monospecific, rare, endangered echimyid rodent endemic to southern Bahia Atlantic Forest in Brazil. There have been no records published last 20 years, region has experienced significant forest loss degradation. According IUCN, only 13 specimens had previously reported, with 12 found north Ilhéus adjacent municipalities, one recorded approximately 200 km away from this region, suggesting that its might be wider. ABSTRACT Land‐use changes and related anthropogenic pressures are responsible for biodiversity declines threaten the provision of ecosystem services, especially in tropical forests. Seed dispersal predation, example, important ecological processes shaping plant diversity composition; however, they can be strongly affected by such changes. Understanding factors that limit seed removal and, consequently, final fate human‐modified landscapes is vital to enhancing our knowledge functioning. By using structural equation models, we evaluated direct indirect effects landscape structure, stressors, abundance terrestrial mammals on patterns Eschweilera ovata (Lecythidaceae), a common large‐seeded species, 18 Atlantic Forest fragments southern Bahia, Brazil. We used camera traps record potential seed‐removing spool line experiments assess ultimate seeds. reveal effect patch size percentage seeds removed, with decreasing larger forest fragments. Our results also demonstrated negative human population density mammal abundance; although was not detected. We, therefore, recommend should mitigated enhance recovery fragmented further research incorporate other predictors better elucidate complex

Abstract Frugivorous mammals play an important role in maintaining biodiversity and are considered one of the main dispersers large seeds. In this study, we describe structure interaction network between non-flying seven plant species with fruits a megadiverse savanna-forest mosaic Brazilian Cerrado. We also evaluated individual contribution each to organization tested whether body mass determined mammals’ network. To record frugivory events arboreal terrestrial habits, camera traps were installed at ground canopy levels. identified 18 mammal interacting 515 events. Our observations highlight modular non-nested topology structure, which reflects importance group potential seed dispersal. The extinction frugivorous can cause several damages ecosystem services Cerrado through changes especially threatening survival fruits.

During the last century landscape of Po delta (Italy), one most important European deltaic areas, was strongly altered by extended land reclamation and use intensification. Consequently, loss lowland forested area that once along region's coast took place. The present study aims to evaluate ecosystem services provided Bosco Mesola woodland, a remnant-forested 1,058 ha located on an agriculture-dominated landscape, nowadays protected as National Nature Reserve. Five were selected evaluated both in biophysical monetary terms, including provisioning (firewood production for industrial bioenergy households’ heating purposes), regulating (air quality climate regulation carbon storage), cultural (eco-tourism), using experimental collected data modeling. results underlined Reserve provides total 10.4 M€ yr-1 stores estimated value 7.2 M€. Notably, services, such air (i.e. PM10 O3 removal) accounts 98.5% annual value. While raising issue related identification conservation ESs with no direct market value, whose socio-political applicative fields have great relevance, this demonstrates remnant forests are exceptional providers can significantly contribute reaching multiple sustainable development goals preservation is largely remarked EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030. In regard, integration different methods sources ES assessment allow capture comprehensive range may properly support decision process.
