Abstract Increasing demands for land to deliver multiple and sometimes conflicting services people nature have led the development of an extensive body research focussed on multifunctional landscapes. However, this has created both insight confusion, as authors from a variety disciplines independently tackled question how manage trade‐offs synergies inherent in landscapes that are required produce functions services. We employed interdisciplinary perspective formulate some key questions researchers can use identify blind spots. Our process resulted question‐based analysis support scheme supports reflection recursive thinking about landscapes, beginning with objective setting visions addressing it, grounded baseline mapping, then assessing landscape their single interactions; well sensitivity spatial temporal dimensions. Other points identified need clarity examination unstated assumptions, aims definitions; accounting scale; incorporating stakeholder needs throughout applying suitable methods measurement aggregation. The focus asking guided derives there is no universal correct approach landscapes; aim should instead be find most appropriate given circumstances goals. Policy implications . Tackling current future socio‐ecological challenges undertaking, necessitating collaborative efforts between fields each bring valuable distinct insights. To effectively combat these challenges, require clear focused implementation. Multifunctionality seen means end, rather than end itself. Read free Plain Language Summary article Journal blog.

Abstract There is an urgent demand for substantial reforms in the governance of coastal regions. Recent research advocates a transformative shift European system towards landscape approach. This perspective, informed by narrative literature review on and governance, explores potential value drawing Council Europe Landscape Convention. Our results, presented form manifesto, underscore need to move beyond political administrative boundaries address all landscapes as socio-ecological systems. It emphasises necessity State recognise them public common good, establishing specific arena with dedicated actors institutions. The manifesto also justice through knowledge co production, urging change based regional design envision alternative futures. Additionally, it calls regionalising invites scholars from other transdisciplinary interdisciplinary perspectives contribute this agenda.

Abstract Rural landscapes are facing a loss of biodiversity. To deal with this challenge, landscape governance is seen as an alternative and addition to sectoral policies potential way realizing transformative change for study in the Bulb Region, Netherlands, uses discursive-institutional perspective. A mixed methods approach was used including 50 interviews, participant observation document analysis. The structuration institutionalization three competing discourses were analyzed: hegemonic discourse rejecting any changes bulb farming; emerging aiming enhance sustainability through innovation; unstructured questioning farming. paper shows that strengthens by providing action repertoire farmers changing societal demands, while not view on landscape. Moreover, institutionalized can be very stable if discursive (relation between naturalized perspectives, identity articulated economic interests) non-discursive factors (natural-spatial conditions, structure agricultural sector, embeddedness international trade) strongly intertwined, leaving little room discourses. induced outside Region (e.g., legislation), thus raising question whether appropriate level expect initiation change. For rural transformations come about, solely relying sensible. mix at both higher levels offers more perspective

Abstract The new IPBES work programme “assessment of transformative change” aims to identify factors in human society—behavioural, social, cultural dimensions, among others—that may be leveraged bring about change. In this context and based on its scientific recommendations, the third French National Strategy for Biodiversity 2030 (SNB3), published 2022, contribute implementation France’s international commitments under Convention Biological Diversity EU’s 2030.
