Outdoor tourism can provide nature therapies. Implementation research for mental healthcare aims to establish psychological mechanisms and specify designs, doses durations medical trials. As one component, we tested simultaneous links from senses emotions, emotions self-perceived wellbeing, 524 tourists at 27 forest reserves in China. We used quantitative surveys, person, with: 5-point Likert-type scales measure links; free-text descriptions of their most memorable sensory emotional experiences during these visits; 7-item Personal Wellbeing Index (PWI) 10-item Kessler stress index (K10) health wellbeing. found that Chinese perceive strongly (p < 0.00001) drive determine Senses reported were: sight by 86%, sound 36%, smell 41%, touch 18%, temperature 42%, humidity 20%. The number engaged ranged 1, 39%, 6, 9%. K10 stress-reduction wellbeing was significantly = 0.0272) but weakly (R2 0.009) correlated with the engaged. Future on benefits outdoor tourists, tourist choreography tour guides trail signs, should therefore focus intensity emotions.

Nature exposure improves mental health, human capital, and economic productivity. Outcomes are well established, drivers mechanisms less so. Thrill + skill activities, additional to exercise nature, least studied. We analyse their effects for 40 mid-life women surfers in 16 countries, contrasted with hikers. use an 11-year ethnography, semi-structured interviews, thematic analysis under interpretive grounded theory. The perceive that surfing strongly resilience stress, irrespective of any concurrent clinical therapy. They identify three mechanisms: creating happiness or joy; activity, thrill, triumph self-esteem; social, support friendship from other surfers. these as building a cumulative buffer gratitude life, which provides against setbacks. Conservation of nearshore marine ecosystems gains political support from the economic value cultural ecosystem services surfing. This contribution is greater if mental health benefits surfing are included. For Gold Coast, Australia, these estimated at ~US$1.0–3.3 billion per year. Mental comprise 57–74% total surfing; 4.4–13.5 times direct expenditure by surfers; and 4–12 effects via property inbound tourism. 50 million surfers worldwide, translate to a global ~US$0.38–1.30 trillion Greater accuracy will require multi-year panel studies.

Abstract To advance the theoretical and practical underpinnings for nature therapies, i.e. exposure as a means to improve mental health, we compared most memorable sensory experiences reported by forest tourists in Australia, Chile, China Japan. Sensory are fundamental driver of psychological effects exposure. We first reviewed relevant research from each country language. then conducted 100 on‐site interviews >500 China, compiled 1000 social media posts analysed these datasets using directed‐content qualitative thematic analyses, both original languages translated texts, outcomes country. The key universal: sights plant shapes colours; sounds birdsong, running water rustling leaves; smells flowers, trees, earth; taste temperature clean air water; touch bark rocks. Participants gave detailed descriptions each. These fine‐grained but widespread our principal finding. at scale that is broad enough apply prescriptible therapies any forested region, fine be used future quantitative test therapeutic designs, doses durations. This distinguishes them prior research, either too or therapy design. Future aiming maximise health benefits may not need distinguish different countries cultures, differentiate more finely precisely than therapy‐related date.
