The development of effective control strategies targeting non-native ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae and Platypodinae) represents an emerging challenge. This is due both to their rapid spread into climatically suitable newly invaded regions rich in susceptible host plants the limited knowledge concerning sustainable management tools. In this context, use botanical insecticides, such as plant essential oils (EOs), considered a promising option Integrated Pest Management (IPM) alternative conventional insecticides for crop protection. Here, impact five EO nanoemulsions (Rosmarinus officinalis L. cultivar verbenone, Carlina acaulis L., Laurus nobilis Cupressus sempervirens Betula alba L.) on choice behavior, colonization progeny production by invasive beetle Xylosandrus compactus (Eichhoff) was evaluated under laboratory semi-field conditions. chemical composition tested EOs firstly means gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analyses. Then, were prepared characterized through dynamic light scattering (DLS). Tested showed single or bimodal droplet size distributions nanometric range. Results highlighted significant repellent activity R. cv. verbenone C. (at 3% concentration). However, trend repellence against not confirmed at decreasing concentrations (i.e., 1% 0.5%). Nanoemulsions based significantly affected choices regardless concentration. Indeed, no bioassays, lower number individuals started infesting stems treated with these nanoemulsions. On other hand, effect treatment found offspring produced survived females. Overall, our findings provide new insights toward repellents X. compactus, suggesting future incorporation non-chemical strategies, 'push-pull', part IPM packages pest.

The predatory ability of ants (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) against insect pests can offer an important service to agricultural activities and may sometimes be directly exploited in biological control strategies. codling moth Cydia pomonella (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae) is a major pest fruit orchards, whose complicated by the fact that larvae spend most their life protected within fruits they damage. In recent experiment Europe, pear trees which ant activity was artificially increased addition sugary liquid dispensers (artificial nectaries) suffered less damage caused fruits. While some were already known prey upon mature or pupae C. soil, prevention would require predation eggs newly hatched larvae, have not yet excavated into We verified whether two different Mediterranean frequently observed Crematogaster scutellaris Tapinoma magnum, able laboratory conditions. Our experiments demonstrated both species similarly attacked killed young larvae. On other hand, mostly attracted attention T. magnum but never damaged. Further field assessments are required understand also interfere with oviposition adults larger species, although generally rarer eggs.

Mutualistic associations between ants and honeydew-producing hemipterans have a great ecological evolutionary significance across terrestrial habitats but can also cause pest outbreaks in agroecosystems. At the same time, are often effective predators of several agricultural pests, improve soil quality, control some plant pathogens. Neither ant attendance hemipteran pests alone, nor positive correlation abundance automatically imply that worthy target or key element management strategies. The main tactics ant-hemipteran agroecosystems include use sticky insecticidal barriers, low-toxicity baits, alternative sugary sources, ant-adapted biocontrol agents. Barriers quickly seal ground-nesting from canopy perennial plants unselective towards other arthropods costly terms maintenance. Low-toxicity baits been particularly tested against invasive supercolonial species yet worth considering only when complete elimination colonies be desirable. More recently developed not widely available methods based on provision sources to manipulate behavior allow retain even enhance contribution phytophagous insects pathogens while disrupting their mutualism with pests. Finally, many parasitoids possess specific adaptations bypass attending ants, existence species-specific factors complicate these networks. Abstract Background Toumeyella parvicornis is an alien pest of recent introduction in Italy that infests stone pines ( Pinus pinea L.), its main host plant Europe. Infestations are currently controlled through endotherapic treatments, but the high costs and long‐term inefficacy highlight need for alternative control strategies applicable natural systems as well. An analysis effectiveness autochthonous naturalized predators first step to achieve this goal. This work focused on two candidate predators, Exochomus quadripustulatus Cryptolaemus montrouzieri (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), may potentially T. parvicornis. The was carried out under laboratory‐controlled semi‐field conditions. Results Laboratory tests were assess: (i) predation rate ladybugs over different densities preimaginal stages, (ii) effect presence heterospecific conspecific attractiveness prey colonies. Semi‐field experimentations by wrapping infested pine twigs with net sleeves applying one three treatments: , (iii) containing only population. Both attracted offered prey. more than responded quickly. Conclusions results obtained could be useful planning further explore potential use these biological programs applied areas. Abstract The brown marmorated stink bug Halyomorpha halys is an Asian species that has become a major agricultural pest in North America and Europe. Ants from the genus Crematogaster are predators of H. nymphs Asia, as well Mediterranean, where known native still few. At same time, ants usually do not harm eggs, which target main biological control agents, scelionid parasitoids Trissolcus . However, ants, generalist territorial organisms, may kill or displace variety other insects, potentially interfering with programmes. We conducted laboratory experiments to investigate interactions between Mediterranean ant scutellaris T. japonicus mitsukurii , evaluating possibility could damage parasitized attack during emergence interfere egg‐laying behaviour female parasitoids. Our results demonstrate C. able eggs aggressive towards adult at any stage. presence can slow down parasitization rate females smallest setups; however, this been observed more natural setting. suggest play complementary role together egg‐parasitoids without each other.

The Mediterranean, a global hotspot for rare ant species, hosts significant representation of the diversity mainly Holarctic genus Temnothorax . Abstract Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) play a relevant ecological role across terrestrial ecosystems. Recent studies suggest that the presence of ants in crops could lead to decrease populations insect pests, but how these actions can vary along different trophic levels is not well known. The southern green stink bug, Nezara viridula (L.) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), cosmopolitan agricultural pest which regularly found on horticultural agroecosystems closely associated with its main egg parasitoid, Trissolcus basalis (Wollaston) Scelionidae). We conducted laboratory experiments test whether two Mediterranean ant species, generalist predators Crematogaster scutellaris (Olivier) and Tapinoma magnum Mayr, attack N. eggs or nymphs, they interfere parasitization activity T. . experiment showed both species significantly increased mortality whereas do their parasitoids. Our results parasitoids may have an integrable biocontrol strategies against this pest.

Abstract In this work, we identified the trail pheromone of ant Crematogaster scutellaris. We combined gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis extracts from hind tibia, location respective glands, with automated following assays. The study found tridecan-2-ol to be strongest discriminator between tibia and other body part extracts. Tridecan-2-ol elicited trail-following behaviour at concentrations 1 ng/µL. A separation enantiomers showed responses ( R )-tridecan-2-ol already 0.001 ng/µL only a 1000-fold higher concentration for S )-tridecan-2-ol, suggesting that enantiomer is used by C. scutellaris in its natural environment. also strong behavioural 2-dodecanol, substance was not detectable extract , but which has been reported related species castanea. discuss contribution these results 'dissection reconstruction' strategies mechanisms underlying social organization ants.
