The anaerobic digestion technology has been in existence for centuries and its underlying theory established decades. It is considered a useful the generation of renewable energy, provides means to alleviate problems associated with low access energy. However, great deal current research targeted towards optimization this under diverse process conditions. This review presents an in-depth analysis chemistry discusses how can be used optimize system performance through identification methods that accelerate syntrophic interactions different microorganisms improved methanogenic reactions. Recent advances addition old are discussed order offer general but comprehensive synopsis accumulated knowledge digestion, as well overview previous future directions opportunities AD technology. Achieving sustainable energy requires reforms not just economic, social policy aspects, also all technical which represents one most crucial investments systems.

Conductive materials (CM) have been extensively reported to enhance methane production in anaerobic digestion processes. The occurrence of direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) microbial communities, as an alternative or complementary indirect (via hydrogen formate), is the main explanation given justify improvement production. Not disregarding that DIET can be promoted presence certain CM, it surely does not explain all observations. In fact, methanogenic environments was only unequivocally demonstrated cocultures Geobacter metallireducens with Methanosaeta harundinacea Methanosarcina barkeri and frequently sp. are detected improved driven systems. Furthermore, conductive carbon nanotubes were shown accelerate activity methanogens growing pure cultures, where expected occur, hydrogenotrophic ubiquitous full-scale digesters treating for example brewery wastewaters, indicating important mechanism those This paper presents overview effect several iron-based carbon-based CM bioengineered systems, focusing on communities' changes. Control assays, fundamental elements support major conclusions experiments, critically revised discussed.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an effective biological treatment for stabilizing organic compounds in waste/wastewater and simultaneously producing biogas. However, it often limited by the slow reaction rates of different microorganisms’ syntrophic metabolisms. Stable fast interspecies electron transfer (IET) between volatile fatty acid-oxidizing bacteria hydrogenotrophic methanogens crucial efficient methanogenesis. In this interaction, electrons are exchanged via redox mediators such as hydrogen formate. Recently, direct IET (DIET) has been revealed important route AD. Microorganisms undergoing DIET form electrical connections membrane-associated cytochromes conductive pili; thus, not required exchange. This indicates that more thermodynamically favorable than indirect IET. Recent studies have shown materials (e.g., iron oxides, activated carbon, biochar, carbon fibers) can mediate DIET. attach to materials’ surfaces or vice versa according particle size, biofilms aggregates. Acceleration of the anaerobic digestion (AD) process is crucial to achieving energy-efficient recycling organic wastes. Hydrochar produced by hydrothermal liquefaction biomass, yet its application in AD rarely reported. The present study showed that sewage sludge-derived hydrochar (SH) enhanced methane production rate glucose 37%. SH increased from acetate but did not affect acidification and H2/CO2. hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis, which could be due direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) converting H+, e–, CO2 methane. Trichococcus Methanosaeta were dominant with SH. Label-free proteomic analysis was involved DIET as reflected up-regulation proteins methanogenesis. Hydrochars derived corn straw (CH), Enteromorpha algae (EH), poplar wood (PH), well activated carbon (AC), also tested process. SH, CH, EH obviously rates, 39%, 15%, 20% higher than control experiment, respectively. It neither electrical conductivity nor total redox property hydrochars AC abundances surface oxygen-containing functional groups correlated rates.

At present, high-solids anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge has drawn great attention due to the superiority its small land area footprint and low energy consumption. However, a high organic loading rate may cause acids accumulation ammonia inhibition, thus leading an inhibited pseudo-steady state in which electron transfer through interspecies hydrogen (IHT) between acetogens methanogens is blocked. In this study, adding 50 mg/g TS (total solid) magnetite clearly reduced short-chain fatty accelerated methane production by 26.6%. As demonstrated, individual processes could not be improved when methanogenesis was interrupted. Analyzing stable carbon isotopes investigating pathways using acetate H2/CO2 as substrates together proved that direct (DIET) enhanced magnetite. Metatranscriptomic analysis determination key enzymes showed IHT partially substituted DIET, acetate-dependent after blockage scavenged. Additionally, expression both pili c-type cytochromes found decrease, indicating replace their roles for efficient methanogens; thus, robust chain established.
